The Mayor cal led for more study

She said she was concerned that
84 percent o f the city’s residents

widespread.”
Katz urged residents to offer
their input and help her and the coun
cil form a "grounded and thoughtful”
budget.
“This is a $ I billion dollars pub
lic corporation with nearly 5,000
employees, providing a range o f ser

filing pot holes to providing police
protection," Katz said. “To servecit-

Farrakhan
Goes Political
Black muslim leader Louis Far
rakhan, basking in the success o f his
Million Man March, said his Nation
o f Islam movement will now plunge
into politics and become a “third
political power.”
The 62-year-old black leader
said his organization would follow
through on the assembly o f what he
said were more than one mi 11 ion black
men.
Farrakhan said his organization
would enter politics for the first time,
register and mobilize millions o f
blacks and other disaffected voters
to become a force in the 1996 presi
dential elections.
“And so, we feel that rather than
establishing a third political party,
we will establish a third political
power that will draw from the Dem
ocrats, the Republicans and indepen
dents and we will work together,” he
said.
“Our loyalty will be to an agen
da that is in the interests o f our people
and the poor and the vulnerable o f
this nation,” said Farrakhan.
Disavowing any political office
ambitions himself, Farrakhan said he
would work with other black organi
zations to get a political agenda to
help blacks and the poor.
Farrakhan vowed to “tap that
vast vein o f dissatisfaction and we
intend to be a force in the next
election...w e intend never again that
our vote or our presence wi 11 be taken
for granted again.”
In recent presidential elections,
blacks have overwhelmingly voted
for Democratic candidates.
But asked if the White House
would have a liaison with Farrakhan
to mend racial divisions, McCurry
said flatly: “No." Administration of
ficials have criticized Farrakhan’s
past rhetoric against whites. Catho
lics and Jews.
Farrakhan repeated his call fora
meeting with Jewish leaders who have
rejected a conference arguing he is
an anti-Semite. But Farrakhan said
he was acting in a “responsible"
manner and Jewish leaders were “ ir
responsible" in turning him down
and he would go around the leaders
to meet with other Jews.

US WEST Cellular has com
pleted the integration o f the Port-
land-area cellular network and sys
tems, formerly operated by GTE
Mobilnet, into U S WEST Cellular's
Pacific Northwest network.
E ffective im m ediately, U S
WEST Cellular is reducing roaming
fees on some calling plans and many
Portland-area customers can enjoy
using their cellular phones throughout
Oregon and Washington at lower rates.
“Although U S WEST Cellular
assumed ownership o f the Portland
cellular license in July, there was still

think Jim Bunn, and many other mem

Banning abortions at D C . Gen

right-wing agenda to take choice away

unsafe abortions. More back alley
