Ducks Celebrate Win Over Huskies
Patrick Johnson scored on an
89-yard kickoff return to open the
game and Joshua Sm ith added
three field goals as 19th ranked
Oregon scored the first 24 points
and held on for a 24-22 Pac-10
victory Saturday over number 22
W ashington in Seattle.
The victory was the birggest
celebraton for the Ducks since last
year's trip to the Rose Bowl.
Jo h n so n took the opening
kickoff and raced around a crowd
to his right and down the sideline
89 yards for a score. It was his
first k ickoff return of the season.
“H e’s (Johnson) been a back
up all y ear,” Oregon head coach
Mike B ellotti said. “We decided
to take a look at him in mid-week.
We wanted to create some oppor
tunities for him to handle the foot
ball and that was a way to do it.”
After Smith kicked field goals
of 30 and 22 yards to make it 13-
0, Ricky W hittle scored on a four-
yard run with two minutes left in
the half for his 11 th rushing touch
down of the season.
Tony Graziani then connected
with C ristin M cLemore for the
two-point conversion and a 21-0
lead.
Smith booted a 34-yarder 18
seconds before halftim e to cap
the Oregon scoring on the day.
Graziani com pleted 22-of-37
passes for 282 yards and two in
terceptions while M cLemore had
nine receptions for 155 yards.
“I thought we played a great
first half,” Bellotti said. “We did
everything we wanted to do on
both sides of the football.
"To W ashington’s credit, they
came out a different team in the
second half and played great op
portunistic defense,” Bellotti said.
Oregon im proved to 7-2 and
4-2 in the Pac 10 while W ashing
ton dropped to 5-3-1 and lost its
first conference game of the sea
son (4-1 -1).
The H uskies are now one-
game behind U-S-C for the Pac-
10 lead and stand one-half game
ahead o f Oregon.
The Huskies staged a valiant
s e c o n d -h a lf com eback led by
Rashaan Shehee, who had two
scoring runs. His first, from five
yards out 5:01 into the third qua
ter, was followed by a successful
two-point conversion run by quar
terback
Damon Huard. S hehee’s sec
ond touchdown, a four-yard scam
per with 8:40 rem aining, was
ca p p ed by a H uard to E rnie
Conwell two-point conversion that
cut it to 24-22.
In between, Huard hit tight
end Cam eron Cleeland for a 42-
yard touchdown with two minutes
left in the third period, but the
conversion attem pt failed.
"We had total control in this
gam e,” Shehee said. “It was all in
our hands to either win it or lose
it. We d idn’t execute and we lost.
In the first half, we just w eren’t
executing period.”
Huard went 21-for-36 for a
career-high 327 yards and one in
terception while Dave Janoski had
four catches for 91 yards.
Huard entered the day w ith
out an interception in his last 81
attempts.
The Huskies rushed for just
16 nei yards on 24 carries.
"This is becoming a season of
what it's," Huard said. "We should

Strickland Faces
Assault Charge
Portland Trail Blazers point guard
Rod Strickland was arrested Monday
in New York for an incident last month
in which he allegedly punched his ex
girlfriend in the head.
Strickland surrendered at the po
lice station where a criminal com
plaint was filed by the woman in Oc
tober, authorities said. He was charged
with misdemeanor assault and released
with orders to appear at Bronx Crimi
nal Court at a later date.
According to police, the com
plaint said that Strickland punched
the woman in the eye and side of the
head during an argument.
Strickland is a New York native
who played high school basketball in
the Bronx and began his NBA career
with the New York Knicks. The Trail
Blazers were in New York to play the
New Jersey Nets on Tuesday.
Strickland is one of the league’s
better point guards but has had his
share of off-court problems in his
seven-year career with the Blazers,
Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.
Strickland averaged career highs
of 18.9 points and 5.0 rebounds last
season and was fourth in the league in
assists with 8.8 per game. He has 31
points and 16 assists in two games this
season.
