AT & T Workers Descend On Northeast Charity Gift Store Opens For Kids
Volunteers and buckets o f
paint, hammers, nails and shovels
went to work last week in a fragile
pocket of Portland, the Northeast
Roselawn area.
More than 150 volunteers from
AT & T Wireless Services joined
the Albina Ministerial Alliance, the
Franciscan Enterprise ofOregon and
the Northeast Community Devel
opment organization in the “com
munity service week" effort
The volunteers focused on
the painting and the rehabilita

minor repairs were made for eld
erly and low-incom e residents.
A I & I W ireless Services sup
plied the m aterials.
“This is exactly what has been
needed on Roselawn,” said Cornetta
Smith, executive director o f the Al
bina Ministerial Alliance. “We be
gan sheltering homeless families here
in 1987. We thought, ’Ifwe run who’s
going to take a stand?”’
Smith said the Ministerial Alli
ance is currently working to create
affordable housing, but faces an in
creasing homeless population due
to low-income families displaced
by rising rents.
“This project will have a long
term effect on the morale and well
being o f this neighborhood,” Smith
said.
The three non-profit groups pro
vide continuous help to low-income
families in north and northeast Port
land Hut each organization is faced
with the challenge of preserving and
creating affordable housing in an
environment of rapidly escalating
housing costs.

Seventy area children’s chari
ties have joined hands to open Our
Children’s Store for the third annual
season.
The outlet started business last
week at a new location on the third
floor of the Galleria on Southwest
IOth and Morrison. It will remain
open until Jan. 15.
Our Children’s Store is not a
store with kids’ stuff only; it’s a
holiday gift store for everyone. All
the profits go to help children, thanks
to generous corporate underwriting
from AT & T Wireless Services,
Nike, Gerber Advertising and many
others. The Galleria has donated the
retail space.
In its first two seasons, the store
raised more than $350,000 to help
local kids in crisis.
This year, the store is selling
