Methods to Curb Domestic V iolence
As Retailer Donated Percentage
o f Sales On October 13
Students at a historically black,
all-male college in Atlanta are edu
cating their peers about sexism and
domestic violence. A summer camp
in North Carolina is serving children
from families in which there is abuse.
A pioneering battered women’s ad
vocate in Texas is establishing what
will be the nation’s only toll-free 24-
hour dom estic violence referral
hotline. These outstanding and inno

The seven programs - based in
Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago,
New York City, Pomona (Califor

received $ 10,000 awards at the event,
co-hosted by Family Violence Pre

Director Esta Soler and Marshalls,
Inc. President Jerome Rossi. Several
employees o f Marshalls who donat

Marshalls is a major contributor to
efforts to address America's epidemic
o f domestic violence.
“Domestic violence is a tremen
dous and pervasive problem for fam

ilies, communities and businesses,
Rossi said. “Peace begins at home,
and the Marshalls Domestic Peace
Prizes are designed to build recogni
tion that domestic violence can be
prevented. With creativity and com
mitment, the epidemic o f battering
can be stopped.”
Rossi announced that Marshalls
contributed a percentage o f sales from
all its stores to the FUND on Shop

FUND administers the Peace Prize
program.

to provide assistance in developing
appropriate workplace policies and

Grant funds will also be used by
the col lege to enhance its community

senor citizens through senior adult
education and activities programs.
Presently the college offers a
bachelor o f science degree in sociol

direct major faculty and student con
ducted research on trends affecting
senior citizens.
“We will be addressing, specif
ically, issues affecting seniors in the
Halifax area, while also conducting
research in the black communities
throughout the state o f Florida in
order to develop models to respond
to their needs,” said Dr. Shelia Y.
Flemming, chairman o f B-CC’s Di
vision o f Social Sciences.
According to Dr. Flemming,
“Occupation projections show tre
mendous demand for individuals
trained for employment in the health
care services sector. Health profes

are among the fastest growing and
are absolutely essential to meeting
