Atlanta Fans Savor Series Win
10-Time All-Star
Ryne Sandberg To
Return To Cubs
T heC hicagoC ubs announced
to d ay that 10-time A ll-Star second
baseman Ryne Sandberg will com e
out o f retirem ent and rejoin the
team for the 1996 season.
The C ubs said Sandberg has
signed a one-year contract. Finan­
cial term s w ere not disclosed.
The C ubs granted Sandberg
free agency, effectively canceling
his five-year, $30 m illion contract
which ran through the 1996 sea­
son, and then signed him to the
one-year contract.

in his 1993 w hite M ercedes when
an unknow n suspect sudden'y ap­
peared at the d riv er’s side w indow
and fired one shot from an un-
| known caliber weapon.
A spokesperson for St. Jo ­
sep h ’s H ospital said Sheffield was
treated for a “puncture w ound’’ in
| his left shoulder and released.

m ands skyrocketing, the pressure is
on to m ake another cham pionship run
for the C hicago Bulls, Phoenix Suns,
San A ntonio Spurs and the Indiana
Pacers, but here in P ortland the play­
offs could be out o f the picture for the
first tim e in over a dozen years.

ferent o f the rebuilding Blazers. Will
P.J. C arlesim o and his coaching staff

tions for this squad and m ost experts
are picking the B lazers to finish well

signs. Sure it w as only pre-season and
most team s have their rosters set, but
when you have a brand new arena and

(thum b), James Robinson (broken fin­
ger), Bill Curley (ankle surgery) and
Aaron M cKie (facial surgery, the Blaz­
ers hobble into the regular season with
som e questions on the bench. The
likely scenario isC urley and Robinson
on the injured reserve list and W il­
liam s m aking it back by Friday as
M cK ie plays with a protective mask.
The B lazers are still short-handed at
point guard and m ight find room for
M ichael H aw kins, a free agent rookie
out o f Xavier.

be locks to m ake the opening night
roster. Slater, who played for D enver
last year, had knee surgery nine months
ago but still show s the skills at for­
