What is it? “A flying saucer” in
pur midst.
As I approached the steel and
glass building, approxim ately
785,000 square feet on 8 levels, it
all looked so complicated.
Feeling like a tourist besieged
by a fortified spaceship, seemingly
a harmonious celebration and the
official openingofthe Portland Trail
Blazer’s gigantic Rose Quarter was
taking place.

What a pleasant surprise Port­
land’s arrival of a full entertain­
ment complex, the Rose Garden
arena, the Memorial Coliseum, the
Commons, One Center Court, the
Box Office, and the new Trail Blaz­
ers, Inc. and the Oregon Arena Corp,
offices.
Attentively observing a watch­
ful eye stood the green glass peaks
iff the Convention Center, separat­
ed by the Rose Transit bus center
and Max, the light-rail system.
Saturday, these ram­
bunctious encouraged the
attendance o f approxi­
mately 70,000 guests, ex­
cited fans who paid a
buck to benefit the Boys
and Girls Club, Legacy j
Emanuel Children’s Hos­
pital and the Urban
League Youth Program.
The construction
took 27 months, which
spread over 37 acres of
land and $262 million to build. The
Rose Quarter enjoys the full view of
the Willamette River framed by the
magnificent goings-on o f the Water­
front.
What a beautiful day, God made
a perfect 10 “lit to perfection,” the
golden sun, sunshine galore, was the
gift which unveiled this event made
for a huge success. The exciting sur­
prise o f the magical computerized
fountain, no matter how risky the
cold spurting faucets,
the w ater show had
watchers suddenly par­
ticipating.

filled sports/food and
entertainm ent.
Dressing for suc­
cess in traditional Oregon weekend
garb - the jean scene and jogging
su its galore and caps and hats topped
the occasion.
The majestic look o f mother
nature’s Mt. Hood painted the clear
ski-scapes while overseeing all the
goings-on around town - this is tops
- a day that makes all Oregonians
proud! The Saturday Market's flair
of ambience provided additional en­
ergy.

If you thought your big brother
got on your nerves take him to see
ijtfeal Big, Steal Little. This film is a
whimsical comedy about sibling rival-
ty. Andy Garcia plays twin brothers
Robby and Ruben Martinez who bat­
tle over land and an enormous fortune.

There are no bombs blowing off
faces and even the bad guys are reha­
bilitated. The film slows in the middle
but it is worth sticking through to the
end. Ifyou are tired of seeing Latino’s
only as pimps, drug dealers and wel­
fare recipient Steal Big, Steal Little
shows them as decent, hard working
human beings. This movie has a won­
derful humanistic feel to it and that is
truly revolutionary.

A “ To Die For" Art AIDS Ben­
efit at the Broadway Metroplex star­
ring Nicole Kidman, (wife o f Tom
Cruise) Mat Dillan and Joaguer Phoe­
nix, was a smashing success.
The film was produced by Ore­
gon’s own Gus Van Sant, re-opening
the door to his firm directing career,
due to the bomb o f his movie: Even
Cowgirls Sing the Blues."
The high energy created in all
four theaters totaled approximately
500 film-makers and industry-relat­
ed fans. Van Sant made brief open­
ing remarks, stating the beautiful cin­
ematography layout was Aimed in
Toronto, Canada, to reduce cost. The
film concept and artistic presenta­
tion showcased his talent to the max.
The event raised more than $ 100,000,
which included an American Foun­
dation for AIDS Research matching
challenge grant.
Van Sant wore a handsome cus­
tomized denim tie died fringed
sleeved jacket with his traditional
jean attire.
On film, Kidman as a “fatale,”
looked radiant in an array o f colorful
jewel-toned suits - (but not to die
for). Dillon and Phoenix gave out­
standing performances. At an ultra­
extravaganza reception honoring his
efforts, held at the Intermediate Per­
forming Arts Centers, “ I hope you
like it,” turnedto'T m gladyou liked
it.”
The desserts - presentations of
pastries - was to wake up and “ta die
’for.’’ My favorite was a beautiful
chocolate cake, grapes dipped in
white chocolate and curled on top of
the cake, embellished by huge choc­
olate leaves, layers of decadent fill­
ings and sliced thin - almost to beau­
tiful to eat.
The wine and champagne never
stopped flowing. Catering was by
Mickey Finn’s Brew Pub.
