"Dead Presidents", the second
film by the Elughes brothers is sort
of a “Menace II Society” robs a
bank. Although, the story is broad
er "Dead Presidents” still ends on
a, “if you are a Black male why are
you bom?” note.
The B lack male in this mov
ie is Anthony (Laren z Tate) and
his evolution is the central
theme. For those of us who en
tered our teens in the late 1960s this
film is a wonderful journey down
memory lane with its music and
fashion sense.
Anthony’s world displays a
sense of community with a pool
hall, girl friends and the neighbor-
bv
hood pimp wantobe.
Anthony's desire to be different
lands him on the front lines in the
Vietnam war. The Hughes brothers
pays homage to Black Vietnam Vets
with their visual description of Blacks
who served disproportionately as
scouts.
This movie is one of the few to
include leaflets from the North Viet
namese urging blacks not to fight this
war.
For Anthony to survive he has to
forget everything at home-girlfriend
and daughter included.
He returns to the States in 1973
to underemployment, male competi
tion and a sense of hopelessness. It is
within this hopelessness that he plans
a robbery. Thus, the title “Dead
Presidents" which is slang for dol
lars.
The Hughes brothers should
be commended for their casting of
N ’bushe Wright as the revolution
ary sister o f this daughter’s mother.
We need more images of Black
women as strong tighter rather then
always having babies or getting
high.
I recommend “ Dead Presi
dents” as a current history lesson,
as well as watching the movie mak
ing abilities of these talented twin
evolve.

donna.” J. worked with Vasquez to
finish his demo and within months he
was signed to Mercury.
At eighteen years old. J.
Quest has proven his ab ility to
infuse classic R & B sounds with
raw rap flava, and delivered an
album that’s com pletely o ff the
-hook. I he debut syigle, “ A n y
thing," featuring Mecca Don/Per-
spective rap artist Pudgee, is
about to explode so don't sleep.
J. and Pudgee are a perfect match,
creating a song sweet on the sur
face and injected with just the
right bite o f hip hop flavor.
In a musical genre dominated by
African Americans J. knows the fact
he’s Puerto Rican may raise some
eyebrows, “My race always kicked a
certain type ofmusic and there hasn’t
really been anyone that has done
something different and been suc
cessful. I could make history like
this.”
To hear it is to believe it. He is
history in the making and...
