Murray, an 84- year-old African American woman, at the M ulticultu ral Center in north­ east Portland. Murray gave center staff a short history o f her life: “ I was born in 1912 in Kansas where I lived with mother and dad who fought in the C iv il War to free us from slavery. M y father died in 1920. I lost mother at 18 years o f age. Later I met my husband. We had 3 daugh­ ters and one son,” she said. "In 1948, I was in the VanPort flood. 1 lost everything. I had but the children and our dog. I was awarded a certificate (rom the White House because o f my work in the shipyards and no acci­ dents. I worked at Albertina Kerr's home for children. I love the senior center and all who are in it I love people and these people are my life. Praise the Lord." She worked in the shipyards during World War II and was the owner o f Doug’s tavern from about 1962 to 1977. She was the current owner o f Lovetrain Tavern on Northeast Alberta. Survivors include her husband, Charlie M.
