Omar Gets Hipper
Continued from Metro, page B I
▲
Som e singles define the vibes o f
a season and back in 1990, anyone
sweating through the hot London
summer was m om entarily assuaged
by an ultra-groovy track that seemed
to arrive from nowhere.
“ T h e re ’s N oth ing L ik e T h is ”
made a big im pression on those glued
to British radio during those sultry
three months. In fact, its playful es
sence resonated all around the isle.
Five years and several other hip track
later, the gutsy and playful fund o f
O m ar has only gotten hipper.
For Pleasure, O m a r’s rousing
dom estic debut, show s ju st how
smart, chic and individual his m usic
has become.
I hese days o f course, we know
who O m ar Ly e Lo o k is: One o f the
most distinctive and versatile artists
o f the day, a guy who can instantly
fill the dance floor with his lim ber
contempo soul. A fter a couple o f
ste llar indie releases in B rita in ,
records by the way that were so im
pressive m ajor labels began their
Omar-hunt almost im m ediately - the
singer’s esthetic has blossomed to
fruition.
Fo r Pleasure is instantly memo
rable and singular in today's m usic
a burgeoning industrial area.
The inaugural festival was an
artistic triumph with ja z z talents So n
ny Ro llin s, Mel Torm e and Buddy
Rich
In the ensuing years, the festival
has been a balmy August weekend
home to dozens o fja z z and blues stars,
from legends like D izzy Gillespie, Stan
Getz and E lla Fitzgerald to newcom
ers lik e W ynton M a rs a lis , Jo e y
Del rancesca, Roy Hargrove and Diane

One role for a ja z z festival is to
be a “ hangout” for m usicians and the
Mt. Hood event com plies adm irably.

O m a r’s ranging interests, ja zz,
soul and blues all get equal props in
this w orld - create a track-by-track
diversity. T h is isn’t a hit-p lus-filler
outing. For Pleasure is a record yo u ’ll
keep spinning 'til the finale, when
the k ille r syncopation o f the title
track fades into the airand your ass is
tired o f shaking.
