Plan Ahead For Savings And Comfort Like the fabled ant which read ied itself for winter while his com panions played, planning ahead for the cold and wet season, even in the middle of summer, can have big pay offs. T h e C o m m u n ity E n e rg y project in Portland offers free weatherization for seniors and disabled citizens on low incomes. Trained volunteers install ener- gy-saving materials such as v i n yl storm w in d o w s, w e a th e rstrip p in g fo r d o o rs, caulk, water heater blankets and water pipe wraps. A ll labor and materials are free. “ We get flooded with re quests in the fa ll,” says Maggie Lang, project coordinator, "and we sim ply can't get all the homes weatherized before the cold sea- son hits. So summer is a good time for people to give us a call. We have lots o f volunteers right now.” Plugging up the air leaks that make a home cold and drafty w ill translate into greatercomfort and lower heating b ills next winter when the cold weather arrivers.
