Kaiser, Union In Labor Duel
Continued from front

period prior to the displacement.
This process, the coalition ar
gues, opens their members to unfair
scrutiny and systematic employment
denial.
“ The process allows Providence
to obtain records o f Kaiser union
members’ sick leave usage and per
formance appraisals and w ill demand
that our union members be subjected
to drug screening prior to hire,” the
coalition coordinator told the Port
land Observer.
Herochik said the hiring agree
ment ignores the Oregon Nurses As
so cia tion ’ s union contract at St.
V incent Hospital and brings to ques
tion whether the entire hiring process
could legally apply to Bess Kaiser’s
registered nurses.
The coalition believes i f the
union member has a good record
with Kaiser, then it should be able to
move into new positions in the Prov
idence system without barriers.
The coalition is also demanding
that Kaiser employ as many workers
internally as possible and provide
release time for retraining.
It demands a two year period o f
recall rights for laid o ff workers and
also demands that Kaiser should not
interfere with payment o f unemploy
ment benefits.
In the midst ofthe laborturm oil,
the hospital management is keeping
sealed lips on specifics about it’s
current negotiations with the w ork
ers.
Jim Pruitt, Bess Kaiser director
o f labor relations, however, expressed
surprise and disappointment over the
workers’ charges.
He said Kaiser met with the union
in A p ril and May, but refused to
specify the outcome o f the meetings.
“ We have worked hard to obtain
this agreement with Providence,” he
said. “ In essence this arrangement
provides for Bess Kaiser employees
to be considered with Providence. I
think that ’s a great value to our w ork
ers.”
Some like it hot. For them,
we offer a Power Sm art choice.
Ioday’s electric water heaters are more energy efficient than
ever. But some use energy more efficiently than others. Some even
come with lifetime warranties. With so many choices, picking the
right model can be a bit confusing.
But there is help. If you are thinking about buying a water
heater, call P G E ’s Energy Experts. They can give you information
Portland General Electric
about where to find the most efficient models. And be
sure to ask them about P G E ’s $50 rebate.
Whether your water heater is new or old, here are two
easy ways you can make it more energy efficient:
• Lower its thermostat to between 120-140 degrees Fahrenheit.
(That s plenty warm enough to keep you and your family in
hot water.)
• If you plan to be away from home more than two days, turn
off your water heater at the breaker box.
For more water heating information call the Energy Experts at
1 -800-722-9287. We have lots of hot advice on tap.
