(P ortland O .I.C .) A lternative Learning C enter will hold its 3rd
Annual High School G raduation June 17, 1995 at 2:00 p.m at
Portland Com m unity C ollege Cascade C am pus A uditorium , 705
North K illingsw orth Street, Portland, OR a record num ber of
students (27) will receive high school diplom as. Six students
will graduate with honors. These students have several career
choices which include higher education or vocational-technical
or other skills training. Mrs. Rosemary A nderson, Executive
D irector ot Portland O.I.C . will be the featured speaker.
Portland O.I.C A lternative Education Program , under the
direction of Rosem ary E. Anderson, Executive D irector, and Dr.
Samuel I Kelly, D irector of Education, serves m iddle school
and high school at-risk and dropout students referred from the
Portland Public Schools, Youth Service C enters, Juvenile Court,
other juvenile diversion agencies, and the com m unity.
Portland O.I.C. is accredited by the N orthw est A ssociation
of Schools and C olleges (NASC), registered by the State of
Oregon as a private school, and approved by the Oregon D epart­
ment ol Education to serve handicapped children. The school
received a NASC A ccredited With M erit Award for 1994-1995

Urban League Announces
S ta ff Changes
Clinton D Clarke and Tahja
Jackson have joined The Urban
League of Portland and Ivy Chilcote
has been promoted at the agency.
The announcement was made by
Urban League President and Chief
Executive Officer Lawrence J. Dark
Ivy Chilcote, C.P.A., has been
promoted from Accounting Manag­
er to Director of Finance and Human
Resources. She has worked as an
auditor at Grant Thornton and as
controller at Churchill Companies.
Ms Chilcote holds a B.S. degree in
Business Administration - Account­
ing from Portland State University.
Clinton D. Clarke, has been
named Director of Education and
Career Development. He holds a
Masters o f Education from City Uni­
versity in Seattle and wrote his grad­
uate thesis on Culturally Appropri­
ate Language Strategics for Low In­
come Black Students, Ages Five and
Six. Mr. Clarke'siesponsibilitieswill
include directing programs such as
the P ortland Street Academ y,
Whitney Young after-school tutorial
program, the Male Responsibility
Program, and the Computer Train­
ing Center.
Tahja Jackson has joined the
League as Coordinator of the Urban
Parks Project. In this new position
Ms. Jackson will coordinate a project
to develop parks and park programs
in underserved areas North and
Northeast Portland. The project is
supported by a four-year grant from
the Lila Wallace - Reader’s Digest
Fund. Ms. Jackson holds a B.S. De­
gree in sociology from Portland State
University and has previously worked
for the Boys and Girls Club, United

Parcel Service, and Oregon Chil­
dren's Services Division.
The League o f Portland is a non­
profit, community-based human ser­
vice economic and social justice
agency serving youth and families,
students, job seekers, and seniors in
the metro area.
The League is currently cele­
brating its 50th year of serving the
community. The agency is one of
113 local affiliates of the National
Urban League.
All kids ages 4 lo 13 who live in North and Northeast Portland are invited
to join the fun at a free carnival on Sunday, June 11 from 2:30 pm to 5:00
pm. The carnival will be held at Unthank Park, which is located at the
corner of N. Shaver St. and Kerby Ave. There will be lost of games,
including juggling, a free throw contest, balloon toss, face-painting, a
double dutch contest, wheel of fortune, and much more. Come enjoy free
hot dogs, sno-cones, cold drinks, and other snacks. And don’t miss the
great prizes.
Fun-loving adults and teens are needed to help supervise the activities. For
more information and volunteer sign-up, call 335-0947. The carnival is co­
sponsored by Housing Our Families and Portland Parks and Recreation.
