idents joining the Fifth Pastors for
Peace Friends Shipment Caravan to
Cuba, Monday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at the
Portland State University Campus
Christian Ministry, at the comer o f
S.W. Broadway and Montgomery.
At least two Portlanders will be
m em bers o f the Caravan: Sarah
Rivero, a Cuban-American who has
not returned to Cuba since arriving in
theU.S. in 1969andJimBrinkmann,
who will drive a truckload o f human

are encouraged to join the Caravan,
which will depart from Portland June
8.
D onations o f m edicines and
school supplies are invited as well as
cash to help sponsor a school bus to
be driven to Cuba by caravan partic
ipants from Seattle.
The Minneapolis-based Pastors
for Peace, notorious for their open
defiance o f United States policy to
ward Cuba and other Latin American
countries, lead people-to-people del
egations carrying humanitarian aid
to Cuba, Chiapas, Nicaragua and

Guatemala several times each year
Their work with Cuba is partic
ularly critical at this time, as legisla
tion co-sponsored by Sen. Jesse
Helms and Rep. Dan Burton threat
ens to further tighten the embargo
against Cuba.
The Campaign for Peace with
Cuba opposes the 35-year embargo
and encourages people to become
more informed on the real reasons
for the blockade.

Where Are We Now & Where Will We Go From Here?

M. I saacs
Ashe, Charles Malcolm, died at
57 years o f age on June 26,1964. He
also became an aviation instructor
and a licensed physiotherapist.
LenaG. Brown died at age 76 on
may 27, 1965. She was Democratic,
leader for Cleveland's Ward 18 for
more than 20 years. She was a former
member o f Democratic executive
committee, charter member and hon
orary life member ofW om en’s Dem
ocratic Club o f Cuyahoga County
• and founder o f the Negro W omen’s
Democratic Club o f Ohio.
Austin T. Walden, died July 2,
1965 at age o f 80 years. Austin was
a civil rights lawyer, one o f first two
Negroes named to Georgia State
Democratic Executive Committee in
1963; one o f four Negroes in Geor
gia delegation to Democratic Na
tional Convention, 1964. Mr. Walden
was delegation to Democratic Na
tional convention, 1964. Mr Walden
was involved in court fights for equal
pay for Negro Teachers, Negro voter
registration and negotiated peaceful
integration o f Atlanta lunch counters.
In 1963: three young Black men
graduated from the US Airforce
Academy: Charles Vernon Bush;
Isaac Sanders Payne, IV (Oregon
and Roger Sims, these three were the
first Negro Cadets at the Air Force
Academy which opened in July, 1955.
In 1965: Portland, according to
the Urban League, was very progres
sive in the employment of Blacks in
service industries, retail trade, man
ufacturing, government, etc.
In 1995: We find that Blacks are
last hired; first laid-off or fired; and
are the least qualified. Where are all
the people, especially Blacks, who
reaped the benefits o f the Job Corp,
Neighborhood Youth Corp, VISTA,
Work Study Programs, head Start,
Community Action programs. Adult
Basic Education and Migrant Work
ers Assistance? Are Blacks continu
ing to hurdle barriers o f race in their
chosen way o f life; or are they set
tling for the “shucks on the ear”
instead o f the kernels o f com? Are
Blacks embracing the “get rich quick:
hvpe and schemes which have long
range adverse effects on their fami
lies, their children’s education, and
all to often, create “ life and death”
situations for young Blacks, both male
and female
In
1995:
No
O p in io n
Written but the Supreme Court says
that The Affirmative Action Program
which allows scholarships to be giv
en based on race is deemed unconsti
tutional.
In 1995: One in three children
will grow up in poverty. One in three
will drop out o f school; One in three
will be abused and one in three will
be neglected before reaching adult
hood. Percentage-wise, Black chil
dren are in a higher risk department;
less apt to get a healthy, safe start in
life and less apt to be treated fairly
than any other American group of
children.
In 1995: Our US Government
has slashed $46 billion in aid to chil
dren through cut in foster and adop
tion services, through income assis
tance to poor children, through
childcare and child nutrition O f
Course, these cuts affect Black chil
dren more than others; these children
already suffering the after effects o f
government fostered prejudices, dis
crimination, and legal inequities;
these children who have no health
insurance, no help for their parents
jobs and no money for childcare,
even if parents were given jobs This
reduction in services to children is
equivalent to a death sentence for a
very large num berof Black children
A from ofgenocide, since black chil
dren are especially at risk.
In 1995: The US Government
gave to Oregon 5.6 million with which
to fight crime. On the surface, very
good, but this same government
threatens to cut food stamps, housing
assistance, childcare allowances and
many other services. Tell me. please,
where will parents go and what will
they do to teed, house ar.d medicallv
care for their children0 Will these
children be abandoned, or will par
ents turn to crime (since no jobs are
available) to supply the essential
needs o f their families? Oh! but be o f
good cheer! Our State and Federal
Governments stand ready and able to
deter/save the illiterate, starving,
homeless, diseased, naked black child
from gangs and various other crimes.
I see government dictating more
and more the private areas of human
existence in America, and it worries
me, because there is no "God “ in
government; no spirit o f the law prac-
ticed. Most people in government live
lives so far from God that their chil
dren think that the woman holding the
Christ Child in Leonardo da Vinci’s
“Virgin and the Child” is a sitter.
We cannot be free, unless all are
free We cannot be blessed, unless
we are all blessed with mercy, love,
justice and happiness. Unite, under
God and live, orcontinue the road we
travel and suffer annihilation as a
race o f people.
