M “ This project stands as a reminder, as a testament that this city is dedicated that all o f its neighborhoods are healthy and that each o f its neighborhoods has its fair share o f prosperity, economic opportunity and gov­ ernment resources,” Katz said The mayor said she would look for other economic opportunity sites in the community and that those site would be the focus o f renewed efforts. Katz had earlier called on the Portland Development Commission to develop strate­ gies to boost employment and per capita income in north and northeast Portland. The region has the highest unemployment rate and lowest average income in the metropol­ itan area. She said the commission should identify gaps in the delivery o f jo b training and em­ ployment services and identify ways to im ­ prove or expand community services.' Katz asked the commission to deliver it’ s findings to the city council by November to be considered in the c ity ’ s next budget. “ This project (W alnut Park) is the first to get o ff the ground, others w ill follow with public and private initiatives and w ill include commercial developments as well as hous­ ing,” the mayor assured.
