Group Fights For
Affordable Housing
About 1,000 delegates from the
member churches o f the Portland
Organizing Project are expected to
gather with representatives o f gov
ernment and business in a "w alking
convocation” o f the River District
on Sunday.
This is the latest step in a dis
pute over the district, a develop
ment plan which calls for $870 m il
lion in spending, including $160
m illion in public money.
Since March 2, the project has
been negotiating with leading sup
porters o f the district, including
members o f the central city 2000
task force, the river district steering
committee and the members o f the
Portland C ity Council.
Members o f those groups w ill
be asked to speak at the Sunday
event, which starts at Liberty Ship
Mem orial Park on Northwest Front

About 700 volunteers made minor and major repairs for nearly
40 Portland area residents last weekend in the annual Christmas in
A p ril public serivice program.
The effort is targeted to elderly and low-income residents in need
o f help. Referrals come from various senior and human services
officials.
A big contribution o f labor was donated this year by Fred Meyer
employees. Electricians, roofers and plumbers also donated their
expertise and labor to the various projects.
