An unprecedented team effort
by Portland area Christian schools of
higher education and ministry agen
cies to help meet the needs o f the
urban community has been selected
as one o f seven planning grants
awarded nationally. Grant recipients
could later be selected for much larg
er implementation grants.
The planning grants, which can
run as large as $44.000, are funded
by the Pew Charitable Trusts through
the Center for Urban Ministerial
Education at Gordon-Conwell Theo
logical Seminary in Boston, Mass.
Specific grant amounts are still being
determined. They are being awarded
to community-based education pro
grams that seek to equip urban pas
tors and lay leaders for more effec-
tive ministry in A m erica’s inner cit
ies. The seven winners were chosen
from among 23 applicants.
The new local program, the In
stitute for Urban and Inter-cultural
Studies, was recently organized by
representatives o f 10 local educa
tional and ministry agencies. West
ern Evangelical Seminary in Tigard
was the lead agency in the grant
application process. Also participat
ing are Western Seminary, Portland;
George Fox College, New berg; Mult

The Apostle Paul Says:
“ Know ye not that ye are the
temple o f God”? “The spirit o f God
dwelieth in you".
We are the temple o f God, but
who are we? We are not these bodies
in which we dwell, in which God
dwells. These bodies will return to
the "dirt" from which they came, but
we shall live on and be changed in the
“twinkling o f an eye” from corrupt
ible to incorruptible, from mortal to
immortal. Our God, in his wisdom,
beauty and strength cannot dwe 11 (w i 11
not dwell) in corruption. Therefore.
G od's temple is not a decaying body,
but the very heart o f man, that faculty
o f man that directs us to prayer, to
thought and spiritual m editation,
which in turn, connects the soul to
God. This is not to say we should not
take care to preserve and prolong us
age of these bodies, but it is far more
imperative that we seek the unknown
through intangible, conscious thought,
which leads to meditation and prayer
and thereby, to God. We cannot pene
trate God's thoughts, nor God’s will
with our bodies.
Doctors cannot save a m an's life
if it is his will to die. Any wise person
will acknow ledge that it is wrong and
absurd to cease efforts to prolong
life, attain happiness and continue in
health; yet a great portion o f our
society lends their thoughts, their
efforts and force o f free will to the
disruption o f the unity o f peace, o f

Ecumenical Ministries o f Oregon has named award recipients for the
Second Annual HIV Honor Awards Event to be held on Monday, April 24.
1995 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel in Portland. The award winners,
selected from more than 100 nominations received from throughout the
State o f Oregon will be honored for their outstanding work in addressing
the needs o f those who are infected with the HIV virus that causes AIDS.
Each o f the award winners will receive a prismetallic sculpture created by
Larry Kirkland, Portland’ renowned artist who recently moved to W ash
ington, D.C.
We W elcom e You To The
hope and o f faith, which if practiced,
brings about love, which is o f God,
from God and is God. By their own
choosing, the temple in which God
dwells is destroyed and man loses
connection with God and other men.
The spiritual building is destroyed
and the dead corpse oozes forth big
otries, hypocrisies, prejudices, su
perstitions and phantoms. We w hite
wash murder through legal abortion;
we no longer gather strength and
wisdom through suffering, but with
secret assistance, we foster death on
the body and call it the exercise of
'■free" choice.
In Christ "the building (the per
fect being) is joined together to be
come a holy temple in the Lord” .
Eph. 2:21. This building is God s
family , built on the foundation ofthe
Apostles and Prophets, with Christ
as the cornerstone. Eph. 2PI9-20.
Until recent years, the Black Race,
progressing form Colored, to Negro,
to Black, has never carried the stig
ma o f suicide, nor were they prone to
cremate their dead, nor would they
ever give up their children. The ex
tended family was not a conscious
thought, it was a built-in fact. Many
o f this race, especially males, inun
dated w ith serm o n s, sp ie ls on
progress and "fight fire with fire"
philosophy, rejected as “old fash
ioned" the teachings and spiritual
upbringing o f the Ancient Ones and
assimilated themselves into an ad
verse culture, foreign to their nature,
their very foundation; bringing about
a rapid destruction of their bodies,
the temple o f God.
There is an alternative to self-
destruction; but it is an individual
decision. Just as individuals decided
to rebel against ancient sage teach
ings, so must individuals again con
nect, unashamedly , to the principles
o f God. God Is The Source! Detach
ment form the source produces death.
For every action there is an equal
reaction. Rom. 5:12. Decisions have
consequences. All decisions o f men
affect others, there are none private
or personal. Nothing is free, forgive
ness does not cancel cost. God does
not need us, he is self-sustaining; but
we need God because he is the source
o f life and m an's only resource. John
15:5. The Bible is not “ A" book, but
life; it is not meant for casual read
ing, but for intensive living. It is the
Word (promises, commandments,
directions) o f God. If all people in
the world would live, the world must
know; "God Is The Source O f All
Things. Without this knowledge,
none can please God and eternal
death is assured. Why must we con
tinue to debate life and death? A
futile exercise, since we have no con
trol over either. It is our connection
with the Source O f Life that will
preserve that which we truly are.
immortal. Is mankind so foolish as to
forever reject the Source o f beauty ,
wisdom, strength and life immortal.
Oh. foolish ones, when swill you
accept your Creator and the gift o f
eternal life?
April 17 Deadline To File Protective Pension Refund Claims
Retired federal employees and
surviving spouses need to file O re
gon protective refund claims with
the Department o f Revenue by April
17, 1995 to preserve their rights to
receive any refund that may be or
dered by the Oregon Supreme C ourt.
A challenge to O regon’s meth
od o f taxing federal pension income
is pending before the Oregon Su-
oreme Court. If the court agrees with
the plaintiffs, it may order the De
partment o f Revenue to issue refunds
o f all or a portion o f the Oregon tax
previously collected on the income.
Filing a protective refund claim
does not guarantee the right to a
refund, only the right to receive a
refund if one is ordered by the court.
Claims involving the 1991 tax
year must be postmarked by April
17, 1995 to be considered a valid
claim.
Forms and information are avail
able by calling (503) 378-4988 in
Salem or call toll-free within O re
gon, 1-800-356-4222.
A copy o f the form is provided
for your information.
