Area business and labor organi
zations hav e banded together to turn
two former drug houses into a new
home for the North Portland Bible
College.
The col lege, a community -based
evening school, has been operating
out o f borrowed facilities at commu
nity churches for I I years. It recently
purchased a city block on Vancouver
Avenue in innernorth Portland which
included two existing, but derelict
houses.
The buildings are being reno
vated through the efforts o f a variety
o f volunteers and contractors, in
cluding the National Electrical Con
tractors Association, the Internation
al Brotherhood o f Electrical W ork
ers, Friberg Electric, Baugh Con
struction, and Northwest Natural Gas.
“ We want to thank all the com
panies and individuals have made
generous donations to our college
building program,” said Fred W il
son, chair o f the college board. "They
have greatly encouraged us in our
endeavor to develop a school with
positive impact on the north and
northeast communities.”
Baugh Construction has com
pleted basic work on the remodeling
and Friberg electricians are install
ing new lighting and wiring which is
crucial to the buildings' new func
tions as meeting rooms, a library and
offices.
The electricians have complete
ly replaced the old, unsafe wiring
and installed a new. state-of-the-art
lighting system.
"T h e play w as c le a rly in
sp ired by the L ord and it p o rtra y s
the street life in the inner city
and it b rings a m essage o f love
for the w orld to relate to ," added
Dunn.
Drawing on the characters in
"The Wiz,” Dunn has written a musi
cal play with 24 songs or raps pre
senting strong morality, religious and
anti-drug messages. The play also
features the Portland Metropolitan
Youth Mass Choir under the direc
tion o f Pearl Thomas. The choir is
made up o f 125 singers with ages
ranging from four to 18 years old.
Some o f the music and rapping
is local and original. The remaining
music reads like the past year's Bill
board Top 10 chart for gospel music
and includes populartunes form most
national groups and artists.
Included are tunes recorded by
John P. Kee, Mississippi Mass Choir,
G e o rg ia M ass C h o ir, W itness,
H ezekiah W alker, Ben Tankerd,
Y o la n d a A dam s, Rev. M ilton
Brunson and many others.
Original compositions include
“Crack Monster Poem,” by Lynn
Thomas, “ Stop the Killing by An
drew Shoals, “True Love,” by Selena,
and "Y FO C,” by Joaquin Harvey
and others.
More than 100 persons are in
volved with the production, which
Dunn is direction. Participants come
from many local African-American
churches and include some o f the
leaders o f the Portland gospel music
community. Minister Terry Davis,
who is musical director at Mt. Olivet
Baptist Church, is music director o f
the play.
