I saacs Mary’s Case Continues: I know there are people in this city' experiencing traumatic episodes involving careless, inept, loveless and often hateful people, working in ser vice agencies; Agencies whose ma jo r source o f funding comes from our government. A government without viable controls over these service groups w hose main interest is to make a profit while giving the impression that they are serving people in need; agencies whose interest is focused on maintaining and increasing ad ministrative casts; costs which can be easily siphoned off, rather than aiding those in need. O f course, all agencies receiving funding from Government, United Way and other sources supported by the public art guilty ofm isuseoffunds. ThankGod for those who meet the desperate needs o f most o f the people who apply for assistance F ollow ing M ary ’s case has opened my eves to a great many areas o f need that most people, with high incomes and/or jobs, never consider. Mary, a widow, receiving Social Security W idow’s Benefits, lives in an apartment, paying two-thirds o f her fixed income for rent. She re ceives seventy-three dollars per month in food stamps, which supple ments the two hundred dollars per month in food stamps, which supple ments the two hundred dollars left to her after she pays her rent. (Note: Mary, for two m onths, received eighty-eight dollars in food stamps, but in January, she received a cost- of-living raise on her S.S. check, therefore, the food stam p dollar amount was reduced). Mary pays out o f her remaining two hundred dol lars, electricity and telephone bills, which leaves her approximately one hundred twenty dollars for all her other expenses during the month. She frequently uses paper towels for toilet paper, because it is cheaper. Cost o f transportation is a problem, but Mary manages to scrimp and save enough to purchase a monthly bus pass, which allows her to make the rounds applying for various jobs. Mary quickly became aware that equal employment opportunity does not apply to Senior Citizens. St. Vincent DePaul Senior Job Center, with short term temp, jobs, has helped to keep Mary afloat, supplying mon ey necessary for those things she is unable to purchase with food stamps. Mary sought to enter the Senior Grandparents Program, but found her income was four dollars over the limit set by the government. Mary can no longer afford life and health insurance and her medica tions are becoming more and more expensive. Depressed, lonely and isolated socially, but never a com- plainer or quitter, Mary contacts the Housing Authority o f Portland re garding the low cost housing for which she applied over a year ago. Following her phone call, she re ceived an update application for fed eral preference, which she promptly filled out and returned. She has heard nothing further, but assumes she is on a list somewhere for low cost housing. Mary, desperate, lies on her ap plication for SeniorCompanion with Metropolitan Family Services. She does not own a car, which is re quired, nor does she tell o f the cost- of-living raise she is aware she will receive in January, 1995. Lying is against her up-bringing and religion, but.... In a Bible Study Group, Mary mentions her need for a car, and a fireman who belongs to her Church (much to M ary’s surprise) delivers to her a 1983 car he has refurbished along with the title. Mary must now “find” money for insurance, tags and title change charges and her drivers license must be renewed. A friend loans Mary the money for tags, and Mary uses the telephone bill money to renew her license. Mary' drives, without insurance, to the Senior Cen ter to apply for energy assistance. She receives one hundred ninety dol lars, which will be paid to the her electric company. Mary promptly uses money set aside for electricity to purchase car insurance, setting her payments up on a monthly basis. Always one to see the bright side o f any situation and never failing to thank God for his divine mercy, Mary finds herselfuse ful again. A few ofthe ingredients for suicide are removed from M ary’s life through the generosity o f one man who is unaware of the life he has saved. God is good and His mercy endureth to all generations. Yes, You Can Make A Difference! 1 f ever there was a story that opts for G od’s Church to assume again the responsibility for the poor, the homeless, the naked, the hungry, this is one o f them. Some people in Gov ernment have no compassion and are self serving. These attributes are against G od’s Commandments. It is only through G od’s people can man kind be served, for we are the hands, feet, mind and heart o f God. J r
