Last week, I received a letter from
a veteran in Nebraska asking what
the Department of Veterans Affairs
has been doing about the use of
military personnel in radiation re
search. In looking for information, I
found a release from the VA dated,
ironically, December 7,1994, the an
niversary of the attack on Pearl Har
bor in 1941, which gave an update on
this subject.
According to VA Secretary Jesse
Brown, the VA's Inspector General
has joined the search for records on
radioisotope nuclear medicine or
radiation research that may have in
volved human subjects. Brown
noted that, "Early in the search, we
learned about the possible existence
of a ‘confidential' Atomic Medicine
Division decades ago, but very little
information has, so far, been un
covered." Brown has asked the In
spector General to use his office’s
audit expertise to help identify sour
ces of documentation that can lead to
more important information.
