BLACK HISTORY
Education
Breaks
Prejudice
 Struggle That Lasted 70 Years
African American women join forces for equality. In a struggle that lasted more than 70 years, generations of American women fought for the right to vote. In addition to risking
the scorn of family and friends, crusaders faced imprisonment, riots and entrenched opposition from male politicians, female anti-suffrage groups and the liquor industry.
“Through education we
seek to change attitudes;
through legislation and court
orders we seek to regulate
behavior. Through educa
tion we seek to change in
ternal feelings (prejudice,
hate, etc.); through legisla
tion and court orders we seek
to control the external ef
forts of those feelings.
Through education we seek
to break down spiritual bar
riers to integration; through
legislation and court orders
we seek to break down the
physical barriers to integra
tion. One method is not a
substitute for the other, but
a meaningful and necessary
supplement. Anyone who
starts out with the convic
tion that the road to racial
justice is only one lane wide
will inevitably create a traf
fic jam and make the jour
ney infinitely longer.” -
Martin Luther King Jr.
