Comparing the goal to that set

solved.”
According to Rev. Jentzsch, the
foundation for the ambitious project
lies in the workabi 1 ity o f the Church ’ s
existing programs which successful

Scientology has not been without
controversy, “ We have persisted and
we have won many victories in over
coming the ignorance and fear that
new ideas engender.”
In October 1993 the IRS recog
nized the Church o f Scientology and
its 150 related organizations as tax-
exempt, non-profit groups. The rul

requested.
“We are now moving forward,
focusing on our real objectives, help

Jentzsch.
The Church today operates more
than 2300 churches, missions and
groups in more than 100 countries
around the world.

Campaign for Human Development.
In that time, projects in Western O r
egon have received grants totaling
$1,500,000. Nationally, more $200
million in grants and loans have been
aw arded to over 3,000 self-help
projects.
The Campaign for Human De
velopment is not a matter o f throw
ing money at a situation and hoping
it will go away; rather, it involves
those affected by poverty and injus
tice. “CHD provides resources for
true involvement for those affected
by injustice. JOIN believes that if
adequate solutions are to be devel
oped, these people have to be the key
agents that are working for change.
CHD witnesses to the world that just
c h a n g e m u st com e from the
grassroots” says Rob Justus, Direc-
tor'ofJOIN, Southeast Portland. Mark
Gast, member of the CHD Commit
tee for W estern Oregon notes that
“CHD is involved in areas that the
Church needs to be involved in. The
people served are the ones who Jesus
speaks o f in the Beatitudes - and we
are blessed because we serve them!”
The Campaign for Human Develop
ment follows the adage “do unto oth
ers so they can do for themselves.”
