a shot at competing in the nation
al playoffs.
The Portland Observer had an
opportunity to interv iew Charles last
Thursday and ask him about the up
coming challenges of making it to the
playoffs.
Portland Observer: What is it
about the U.P. men that should make
them a play off contender?’
Charles: I would have to say it
is our consistency and talent.
Portland Observer: What do
you mean by that?
Charles: It means that we strive
for consistency and even though we
are a young team with a lot of fresh
man and sophomores we are a talent
ed team.
Portland Observer: Are you a
offensive cr defensive in your philo
sophical approach.
Charles: I adjust my coaching
philosophy to fit the talent of my
players.
Portland Observer: So would
you say that this team is more offen
sive or defensive oriented"?
Charles: I would have to say
that this team is more offensive.
Portland Observer: At what
point or what game did you consider
it pivotal to this season.
Charles: When we defeated
University of Washington here 7-1.
It was the fact that every thing came
together and every thing we did
worked.
This past weekend Charles and
the U P. men had their work cut out
for them when they faced number
16th rank Santa Clara in the second
half of double header in which the
women won the game 3-1.
In the second half the men
weren’t so lucky as they went down
in defeat to the men's Santa Clara.
The scoring for the game was
decided within the first 8 min
utes of the game. The crucial
point coming oft a penalty kick
by Santa Clara Jeremy Beuttner

unpleasant surprise as they
romped to a 52-0 win over the
previous 4-2 Techman. It was
all Franklin from beginning to
end as the Quakers rushed
fo r 398 yards and six
touchdowns.
A bewildered Benson head
coach Bill Dressel could only
say that his team "must have
been emotionally let down from
their defeat the previous week
to W ilson" Franklin took com-
mand of the game during their
first possession on the second
play when Kenny Jenkins broke
a 47 yard run for the Quakers
first TD.
Jenkins accounted for 209
yards of Franklins rushing total
on 15 carries Jenkins is also in
the hunt for the P.I.L.rushing tit
tle along with Robert Cavil of
Madison.
“Our team is really coming
together” Jenkins said I 11 do
whatever it takes for my team to
win. He further stated that he
looked forward to this game all
year although we (Franklin) had
to take it one game at a time.

Frankin dominated both sides
of the ball and ended the game
with 3 interceptions two by se
nior cornerback Shawn Lindsey.
The Quakers quickly estab
lished the tempo of the game
during the first quarter when they
went up to a 21-) lead.
And when Robert Jamison a
transfer from Benson rushed for
his first touchdown against his
former team the score was 27-0.
Jamison rushed for 59 yards on
15 carries.
Jamison said that it felt good
to score against my school. He
also acknowledged that it was a
w ise move to tra n sfe r from
Benson to Franklin. Jamison
also had one touchdow n called
back for holding.
Franklin is most likely to
be one of four P.I.L teams to
headed for the state play offs.
They can 't afford to dis
miss their next two challenges
M arshall, and Lincoln despite
their records. For all the ex
citement and clam our in the
P.I.L. it has been years since
the Portland area teams has

fully Wilson or Franklin can
make a credible showing this
year to regenerate some respect
for the P.I.L.
