Portland State went up against
Eastern Washington a NCAA
1A team and came out
victorious 31-21.
In front of 11,225 Civic Sta
dium fans the Vikings got off to a
shaky start. But as was to be indica
tive of the evening it was the defense
that made the first score on an Eagles
blocked punt in the end zone in the
first quarter.
While the defense was estab
lishing itself the often lethargic of
fense finally got rolling and quarter
back Kyle Allen posted 294 yards
through the air on 18 of 28 passes.
Allen threw for two touchdowns
to wide receiver James Hundon on
plays of 36 yards and 3 yards respec
tively. Allen also ran for a dramatic
acrobatic touchdown with 1:17 in the
first half.
P.S.U. defense was effective
early and gave the Vikings offense
some great opportunities to score but
they came up empty.
Eastern Washington scored on a
49 yard pass with 12:56 left in the
second quarter. Then with 8:15 in the
second quarter Matt James fumbled
a pass five plays later tailback David
Lewis of Eastern Washington ran
seven yards for a touch do wn to make
the score 14-2.
After that Portland took the ball
and marched 70 yards culminating in
the acrobatic high dive into the end
zone by Allen. Portland went for two
points on a pass play from Allen to
James which was successful. Score
at halftime Eastern Washington 14-
Portland State 10.
The Vikings took the initial kick
off and capitalized on a pass interfer
ence play which gave them a first
down on the Eagles 29 yard line for
a Allen to Hundson 36 yard touch
down play. Putting Portland up 17-
14.
Darrick Holmes put the game
out of reach on the final play of the
third quarter with an 11 yard run for
the touchdown.
However the main credit goes to
the defense. P.S.U. defense caught
Eastern’s gun Todd Bernett 9 times
behind the line of scrimmage for
sacks. Three of them accounted for
by outside lin eb ack er Sam m y
Burroughs.
the usually potent Bernett was
only 15 of 27 through the air for 167
yards.
Coach Walsh was quoted “On
defense we had 9 or 10 guys. So
many contributed. W e’ll have a tough
time picking player of the week.

fensive stand out Kristen Wair who
has a broken bone in her foot.
Coach Charles credits the win
over Pepperdine to moving previous
team top scorer Tiffany Milbret to
midfield. He said her ability to dis
tribute the ball and her work both on
offense and defense made all the
difference in the game. Milbret when
asked how she felt about the change
in playing positions, she answered
“okay. I knew it was helping the
team." Although she did admit to
missing scoring.
McMillan scored on 3 of4 shots.
The first one 30:55 into the first half
off a header from Jody Dutra. The
second on a pass by Nicole Pfeifer on
a post shot from five yards out. The
third and final was unassisted off the
dribble.
Pepperdine scored 56:47 into
the game on an unassisted goal shot
20 yards out.
University of Portland domi
nated most of the first half and set the
tempo for the game. The game was a
little more even in the second half
although U.P. outshot Pepperdine 13
to 7. McMillan now has 16 goals in 8
games surpassing Milbret by two.
The University ofPortlandpres-
ently #2 in the country has lost one

change their ranking.
