SOLV Celebrates 25th
Anniversary On NIKE

Psychiatrist Dr. Cheryl H. Cottrol Marries Civil Engineer Paul Augustus Brown
Dr. Cheryl Henrietta Cottrol, a
practicing psychiatrist and an assis­
tant professor at Yale University
School of Medicine, was married
recently to Paul Augustus Brown, a
civil engineer and machine designer
with a New Jersey firm. The couple
spent their honeymoon in South Af­
rica.
The cerem ony was held at
St. M ark ’s U n ited M ethodist
C hurch at 137th Street and St.
N icholas A venue in Harlem and
was perform ed by the R everend
Dr. G ilbert C aldw ell.
W hen it was suggested to
Dr. C ottrol that she hold her
wedding in a stately downtow n
cathedral, or the reception in a
glittering venue like Tavern on
the Green, she insisted that both
wedding and reception be held
at St. M ark’s, the church she
had attended since being carried
there in her m o th er’s arm.
Mr. B row n is a graduate of
Paddington T echnical C ollege
and W ildensden College of Tech­
n o lo g y , both in L ondon. Dr.
C o ttro l g ra d u a te d from Y ale
U n iv e rs ity and re c e iv e d her
m edical degree from the State
U n iv e rs ity ’s U pstate M edical
center in Syracuse.
Dr. Cottrol is the daughter of
S top O reg o n L itte r and
V andalism (SO LV ), O reg o n ’s
prem ier no n -p ro fit o rg an iza­
tion estab lish ed to address is ­
sues o f liv ab ility in the state,
will celeb rate its 25th a n n i­
versary at a gala event on the
NIKE W orld C am pus in B ea­
verton on Saturday, O ctober 8.
The them e, “ K eeping O regon
Shipshape for 25 years,” will
be carried out with a sum ptu­
o u s s e a fo o d b u ffe t se rv e d
lakeside.
Some o f O re g o n ’s top m u­
sicians, Ron Steen and Friends
featuring S hirley N anette, will
be on hand to play dance m u­
sic. A raffle w ill feature w eek­
ends at S alishan Inn and the
Seaside O cean fro n t Shilo Inn,
a cruise on the S pirit o f P o rt­
land, N IK E products and more.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Cottrol of
New York. Her father is a nationally
published photojournalist who has
been the editor of several publica­
tions, including the Am sterdam
News. Her mother, Jewel Gassaway
Cottrol, recently retired as an ad­
ministrative assistant at the Board of
Global Ministries of the United
Methodist Church in New York.
Mr. Brown is a son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Brown.

Peace And Unity

Bridging the Gap Between De­
spair and Hope for Children and
Families is the theme of two related
conferences, scheduled for October
14 through 17, 1994, in Portland,
Both conferences are focused on
stimulating action benefitting chil­
dren and families in the community.
Both also are aimed at drawing from
the strengths of the religious com­
munity in this call to service.
The first conference is entitled
What Congregations CAN DO For
Children and is scheduled for Octo­
ber 14 and 15 at Trinity Episcopal
Cathedral and Congregation Beth
Israel. Friday afternoon is targeted
for clergy and congregation profes­
sionals. Saturday is a full day pro­
gram starting with a keynote ad­
dress by form er Governor Neil
Goldschmidt. This conference is
sponsored by Congregations for
Children, a partnership joining the
Cam pbell Institute, Ecumenical
Ministries of Oregon and the Albina
Ministerial Alliance.
