Natural Gas
Is Available
A m ple supplies o f natural gas at
com petitive prices w ill be available
to meet the future energy needs o f the
United States, according to the A m e ri
can Gas Association.
“ Natural gas is the consumers’ best
energy choice because o f the excel
lent long-term supply o utlook and the
price advantage it holds over compet
ing energies,” says A .G .A . President
M ichael Baly.
"T h is , com bined w ith h ig h -e ffi
cie n cy natural gas appliances and
equipm ent, makes it possible fo r con
sumers to save m oney on energy
b ills ,” Baly said.
“ Am erica has at least a 65-year sup
ply o f natural gas at current produc
tion levels, based on the latest report
o f the Potential Gas C om m ittee o f the
C olorado School o f Mines. That re
port says the total U.S. recoverable
natural gas resources are 1,168 t r il
lion cubic feet,” Baly says.

Natural gas is the cleanest-burning
fossil fuel, and when used in place o f
other m ore-polluting fuels, can actu
ally help reduce air po llu tio n , accord
ing to the Am erican Gas Association.
Natural gas is cleaner-burning than
other fossil fuels because it is com
posed c h ie fly o f methane — a m o l
ecule made up o f one carbon atom and
fo u r hydrogen atoms. When methane
is burned com pletely, the p rin c ip a l
products o f combustion are carbon d i
oxide and water vapor.
In comparison, o il and coal com
pounds are far more com plicated mo
lecular structures. They include a high
ratio o f carbon, as w e ll as various sul
fu r com pounds. Therefore, o il and
coal em it more pollutants in to the at
mosphere when burned, A .G .A . says.
U sing natural gas instead o f gaso
line in cars, trucks and buses can help
reduce urban pollution and smog. This
is because natural gas emits less re
active hydrocarbons and nitrogen ox

Banks Stop Work Day

volunteer effort to help communities

The second annual “ Neighbors
Make the Difference,” Sept. 13 event
provides free labor and volunteer
assistance to social service groups
and non-profit agencies.
Key Bank employees w ill trade
in their b rie f cases and suits fo r tool
boxes and jeans to participate in a
wide variety o f projects ranging from
a park clean-up to yard w ork for
seniors, to painting a homeless shel
ter, to w orking w ith youth.
The project list fo r Portland in
cludes assisting patients and p ro vid
ing maintenance work on the grounds
at Emanuel Hospital, 2801 N. Gan-
tenbein; painting the recreation room
at the Columbia Boys and G irls Club,
7602 N. Emerald; and w orking w ith
children at the C olum bia V illa hous
ing development at 9009 N. Foss.
“ W e’re totally non-profit, un
der funded, so volunteers are an ex
trem ely valuable com m odity,” said
