ATHLETES OVERCOME
PAM WITH SPIRITUAL
ASSISTS
From Freedom News Service
Runners are often afflicted with
one kind o f pain or another - pulled
muscles, spasms, aches, shooting
pains and pinches that for many have
become a part o f life.
But marathoner Judy Mercon of
Clearwater, claims that pain doesn 't
have to be a natural accompaniment
to running and other sports.
Already on a steady course for
the 1996 Olympics, the 36-year-old
champion runner says that one o f the
most valuable assets o f her running
career has been the discovery of tech
niques which alleviate physical suf
fering. Developed by humanitarian
and founder o f the Scientology reli
gion, L. Ron Hubbard, these tech
niques know as “Assists" help an
individual to spiritually confront
physical difficulties.
Assists operate on the principle
that if injured, on tends to withdraw
from the injured body area. Although
this is a perfectly understandable
reaction to pain, only by returning
attention to the injured area does one
bring the spiritual element into the
healing process — an element that
physicians have long innately recog
nized as a key element in speeding
the healing process.
“Assists are incredibly valuable
for athletes because they reduce pain
and enable healing to progress at a
faster rate,” says Mercon. “This
makes training easier and minimizes
any setback from an injury. 1 have

Back by popular demand is the
golf Tournament, scheduled for Sat
urday, September 10, at Lake Os
wego Golf course. The tournament
features an 18-hole individual stroke
play event with shotgun start. There
will be four divisions: mens and la
dies ages 18-59, and senior mens and
ladies ages 60-plus.

participate. Anni Miller, tennis pro
and owner of Team Northwest, is
coordinating this year’s tournament,
and expects a high turnout. Entry is
limited to adults 21 and over; there is
an entrance fee.
