They started their own farm in Sandy in 1977.___ The Richards family is very in­ volved with the operation of their farm and their community. The fam ily from M adras was selected 1994 O regon State Fair Farm Fam ily o f the year. They own a 540 acre farm producing m int oil, bluegrass seed, hay, grain and cattle. M artin R ichards, 38, and his w ife N ancy, 36, have been in­ volved w ith farm ing all th eir lives. They started their own farm in Sandy in 1977. In 1 9 8 9 ,they m oved to M adras in o rder to in­ crease the size o f th eir land and farm ing capacity. M artin Richards m anages the farm operations and is also chair o f the Jefferson C ounty Soil and W ater C onservation D istrict and c o -c h a ir o f the Farm B ureau Safety C om m ittee. N a n c y R ic h a rd s d riv e s eq u ip m en t and does the farm bookkeeping. She is also a m em ­ ber o f the Farm B ureau Budget C om m ittee and co-chair o f the Farm B ureau Safety C om m ittee. G ary, 17, is involved in the en v iro n m en tal p ro tection p ro ­ gram through 4-H. He has worked to establish and m aintain w ild ­ life habitats on area farm s. Katie, 15, is in charge o f farm w orker p ro tectio n and safety. K evin, 12, is learning how to operate the heavy equipm ent. He also is a m em ber o f 4-H and is the club r e p o rte r. Laura Harrison was one of the many enthusiastic students attending Judah Educational Center this sum­ mer completing a year’s curriculum in mathematics in two weeks of con­ centrated study. Harrison completed 10 chapters of algebra during the period. Other students took various courses in math and language. “Laura’s tenacity and intense motivation to excel in mathematics was simply remarkable,” quoted her teacher Mr. Franks. “She sometimes wouldn't even take a lunch break, even though I insisted that she should. I have always insisted that my stu­ dents work hard to learn all that they can, but I never push them beyond their individual capabilities.” A second session of classes is offered this summer. Additionally, )elaunay Family of Services will eceive its second and third install- nents o f $50,000 each during this "¡seal year. The committee said it was espe- : ially pleased this year to award Port- and Housing Center a $200,000 re­ coverable grant for the down pay­ ment assistance fund. The money will help low- and moderate-income families purchase homes in North Portland. Realtors and other grant­ ing sources provide $1 million to the fund. The goal o f the committee is to fund projects to help meet the needs of the community, create real changes in the community and add to its enrichment and enhancement. Funds are provided by a 50-cent-per ton surcharge collected on garbage dis­ posed at the now-closed St. Johns Landfill. Others grant will be used: to help fund a feasibility study for the proposed Peninsula Crossing Trail, partial funding of Christmas in April/ Portland to enhance the lives of the elderly, low income and disabled Portland residents, to help support the Health Club project, special sum­ mer program for low-income and at- risk youth, to conduct an annual music festival series in Cathedral Park., to install a new 50-gallon hot water heater in Columbia Cottage, to install a second 220-watt powerline to the facility and shelving materials, to purchase a popcorn vending ma­ chine to be used for meetings and fundraising purposes, to obtain h a n d ic a p p e d -a c c e s s ib le p la y ­ ground equipm ent for the St. Johns Park, to help fund the an ­ nual St. Johns Parade, to help provide em ergency assistance to 30 additional fam ilies needing occupancy or utility assistance, and finally, to provide personal services expenses to the Youth C onservation C orps (YCC) crew leader who coordinates extracur­ ricular activities.
