Women’s G olf Invitational, a benefit
for Women’s Cancer Services at City
of Hope National Medical Center and
Beckman Research Institute, will be
held at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club,
Thursday, September 8, 1994.
Nancy Marshall & Carol Falk of
Portland are this year’s chairs, along
with honorary chairs, Norma Paulus,
Kathy Smith, and Molly Crowley.
Last year the event raised $32.000
for City of Hope and the volunteer
organizing committee needs your
support in reaching it’s $50,000
goal.
Proceeds from the event will ben­
efit Women’s Cancer Services, which
includes breast cancer education at
City o f Hope National Medical Cen-

IN THE SPORTSLIGHT

Roberts, a new ESPN series of
SportsCenter spec ials, w il 1 prem iere
Monday, July 25 at 7:30pm ET.
This on-location interview show will
present prominent and successful
individuals who trace the roots of
their success back to the fields of
their childhood sports dreams. The
30-minute premiere will feature
Senator Bill Bradley and rap artist
Hammer.
“ These specials will show
that people can achieve success
through avenues o ther than p ro ­
fessional ath letics,” said R ob­
erts. “They w ill show th at w hat
we learn through p articip atin g
in sports can be applied to our
every day lives. With recent focus
on negatives such as salary disputes
and drug problems, it’s great to be
able to highlight the benefits of
sports.”
The program will include Bra­
dley, a Princeton Rhodes Scholar
and NBA Hall-of-Famer, and Ham­
mer, a former Oakland A ’ s bat boy.
Both have diverged from careers in
athletics to achieve success in non­
sports related fields.

1990, Roberts has served in various
capacities, including hosting Sunday
morning’s Sunday SportsDay, an­
choring SportsCenter, contributing
to NFL PrimeTime and providing
interv iews and reports from the fie Id.
In addition to covering men’s and
women’s NCAA basketball, Rob­
erts serves as SportsCenter s pre­
miere tennis correspondent.

round. That same year another
Brown, whom some co n sider the
greatest running back ever, re ­
tired.
W ooten, 57, w ent on to have
a stellar 10-year career h im self
as a starting guard. He earned
two selections to the Pro Bowl,
and a berth on the all-p ro team in
1965 when the B row ns stom ped
Baltim ore 27-0 for the NFL Title.
Today W ooten is try in g to
bring not only an NFL title, but
a Super Bowl cham pionship as
well to the P hiladelphia Eagles.
In February he was prom oted
from scout to Vice P resid en t-D i­
rector o f Player Personnel O p era­
tions. W ooten will oversee the
team ’s pro and college scouting
departm ents, and will have the
final say on selection picks in the
draft.
“ The o pportunity to m ove up
to this position is som ething that I
have w anted and p rep ared for
since I first entered the m anage­
m ent side o f football, W ooten
said after his prom otion. “ 1 had
alw ays w anted to be in a position
w here I could utilize my talents in
term s o f helping a ball club attain
and m aintain the status o f peren­
nial co n ten d er.”

Donald (16-0, 12 KOs) was a member of the 1992 Olympic team.
The 27-year-old from Cincinnati turned pro in 1993 and is the current
World Boxing council Continental Americas champion. Donald won
the title earlier this year in a fight seen on ABC with a 12-round decision
over then-unbeaten Jeremy Williams. Although the fight went the
distance, it was a clear win for Donald, who won nearly every round
with a battery of crisp jabs and sharp one-two combinations.
