what happens? The whole group is
made to pay. T hey’re put on the spot
for the crimes, whether real or im ag­
ined, o f the individual,” said Dr. Earl
Ofari Hutchinson, author o f The As­
sassination o f the Black Male Image.

this case.

like; Sim pson’s do two things for the
image o f black males. They affect all
black males by convicting them as a
group, and tend to affect media cover­
age o f trials.
When a case involves race, sex or
a celebrity - as Sim pson’s does -
H utchinson said media coverage is
more likely driven by hearsay.
That means they are “ Prejudged
and convicted o f a crime long before
a court o f law kicks in.” And it be­
comes more difficult for Simpson who
m ust defend him self against a pre­
sumption o f guilt. Bentayou, who is
white, disagreed with Hutchinson.
“ I certainly think it’s true that the
