the first black woman to become a
guard at the Oregon State Prison, an
all-male institution.
In 1972, an interviewer asked if
there were any problem s and she re
plied, “sure, there were problem s. But
being a black woman with five chil- ■
dren, you learn now to handle prob
lems because it’s a lifetime struggle.”
There have been many other firsts

In the wake o f the phenomenal
su ccesso f“So M uch...,” the group’s
first recorded effort set about finish
ing their debut album in earnest. The
result is an eleven-song set ot con
temporary R&B at its most inspired.

AH-4-One, their bottom line is
singing - and great songs. Few other
groups in contemporary music could
huddle around one microphone in a
recording studio - as they did on "So
Much In Love" and several other
tracks on the album - and produce
such entrancing, enduring music.
