African-American men and women have played
im portant roles in virtually every significant
chapter of Memphis’ history. They have worked,,
fought, and planned for the city’s growth; they
have shared in its successes and suffered with its
failures. Slavery, caste, and segregation have
forced them to live apart and to create for them­
selves a separate history.
Before Memphis was founded, during and
even afterwards, African-Americans have played
a sig n ificant part in th e developm ent of
Memphis. Robert Church, Sr., one of the south’s
first Black millionaires posted a bond to reinstate
the city’s charter after the Yellow Fever Epidemic
of the late 1800s.
