Ed believes that the single most im portantissucsfacingthcnew M etro C ouncil w ill be planning, w hich was mandated by the new charter. The kicker is, how arc we going to pay fo r it?, since no funding was included w ith the charter recommendation. Ed is opposed to any new taxes until there is absolute justi fication for them. Ed is a firm believer that we must save as much o f our natural areas as we can fo r future generations. It is im portant that we find some way to fund the Green Spaces program. Metro must continue to w ork w ith its part­ ners in the region in managing the mental in reestablishing this pro- M ike Fahey, 47, was bom in Vanport, Ore. He and his four broth­ ers and four sisters were raised in North Portland in the same House D istrict he is campaigning to serve as State Representative. M ik e ’ s M other, Mae Fahey, M ike and his w ife, Sandy, have four grown children and three grandchildren. Fahey was educated in the dis­ tric t and attended N orth C atholic and Roosevelt high schools. He has a journeym an’ s certificate from the Oregon Bureau o f Labor and Indus­ tries fo r the Shipw rightTrade and has completed a variety o f labor and trade classes at Portland State U niversity, Lew is and C lark College and the urban growth boundary so we have orderly rather than chaotic growth. W e must make sure in the continual planning o f transportation that there is a place fo r mass transit, bikes, autos and pedestrians. Ed has been w orking w ith local as w ell as federal agencies to fin d ways to do restoration work on the Colum bia Slough using high school students to do the restoration work. He feels this is an excellent opportu­ nity to introduce young people to environmental projects as w ell as pro­ vide some short term employment opportunities.
