On Tuesday, A p ril 26, Portland
Postmaster Michael J. Daley dedi­
cated a stamp honoring the legendary
courage and valor o f the U.S. A rm y’ s
all-African American regiments (two
cavalry and four infantry) known as
the Buffalo Soldiers.
A ll Portland area residents join
in recognizing these brave soldiers by
obtaining a special postmark that is
offered at four post offices in the
metropolitan area. The stamp dedica­
tion ceremony was held during an
assembly o f all Jefferson High School
students at 10 a.m. Tuesday A p ril 26,
1994 in the school auditorium. The
assem bly feature members o f
Portland’ s Buffalo Soldiers, who are
active in promoting youth programs
in the city. Dressed in their mid-

Although there are many theo­
ries on how the Buffalo Soldier won
his name, the most enduring suggests
it was given to him by the native
Americans because o f this bravery
and courage on the battlefield. Estab­
lished in 1866 by an act o f Congress,
the Buffalo Soldiers constituted one-
fifth o f the U.S. Cavalry serving in the
West, and fought in more than 100
engagements.
