Children often learn these values by seeing how their parents react at work and play. If possible, Pirozzolo encourages parents to reinforce the commitment to sports by tailoring their schedules to meet their child’s practice and game requirements. B ut p a ren tal in v o lv em en t, see what values the coach is teaching. “P arents should w atch o u t for coaches who prom ote rule b reak ing and w inning at all c o s ts ,” P irozzolo said. “ If paren ts ob serve w hat they feel are in ap p ro priate behaviors for a co a c h ,th e y should ask the coach about what they observed.” “If the behavior was out of line,” he added, “the next step is to report the coach to the authorities and re move your child from the team.” Children are the sum of all their experiences, and the concepts learned through youth sports will last a life time. “Never underestimate the impact sports and your support can have on a child,” Pirozzolo said. “And don’t pass up the opportunity to praise your child for doing his or her best, espe cially on the bad days." Pirozzolo says, should not cross into the realm of coaching. He cautions parents to work only on the funda mentals of a sport with their child. Once a child joins a team, the instruc tion should be turned over to the coaches. “At practice and games, your role is tocheerlead,” he said. “Differ ing sets of instructions from parents and coaches can really put a child in conflict.” P irozzolo, who is a p sy ch o lo gist for the H ouston A stros, e n courages parents to ask their child how they should behave at the gam e. “C hildren often get em b ar rassed when th eir p aren ts yell instructions every tim e they step up to the plate. A s im p le ,’you can do it!’ w orks b est,” he said. By supporting their, child at the games, parents also get a chance to WHY PAY FULL RETAIL?
