W ith Earvin “M agic” Johnson back w ith the L ak ers as their head coach the team seems to have a fire lit up under them. W ith a ssista n ts like M ichael Cooper and Larry Drew the old Laker pride may be back as soon as they walk onto the court each and every night. “ We want to instill that pride and dignity,” said C ooper o f the coaching staffs im m ediate plans. It m ight hard for M agic to sit back and wait for Van Exel to mature into a true playm aker by NBA standards. As with any team in the rebuild ing stage there arc lot of unansw ered questions about the future o f the L ak ers as a team. Some o f the m ost in triguing questions start at the top. All the Lakers are saying on the recent coaching change is that we will evalu ate the situation after the seasons over and make a decision then on the future o f the coaching staff. Is 16 gam es enough tim e to give the Laker brass time to evaluate their abilities as coaches? “W hat I w ant to do and w hat they w ant to do are two different things,” said assistant coach and form er L aker Cooper on his future with the team. “So we won’t talk about that till summer. One player who genuinely seems exc ited by the recent coaching change is veteran Laker forward Jam es W or thy. W orthy, one o f three Lakers with Cham pionship rings on the L aker bench, seems to be one o f the leaders off and on the court believing the Lakers can get back in contention soon. “ W ith a full year under his belt, it will help,” said W orthy on M agic ' being his coach next season. “ I really feel good about the future o f this team .” W ith some key ingredients, such as good young talent, like Van Exel and G eorge Lynch and veteran guid ance with W orthy, Jam es Edw ards and K urt Ram bis the Lakers with M agic at the helm could be a fran chise player away from serious con tention. Look for Laker m anagem ent to make some player m oves over the sum m er and possibly move up its lottery to get that one player that can lead the Lakers back to the playoffs. The one unknow n is if Laker m anage ment them selves believe in Magic the coach, not the player. Oregon Pageant Sat • 10:00am til 6:00pm P .I.L SPORTS SCHEDULE (Wed.
