In honor o f National V olunteer W eek,
April 17-23, the Portland/O regon Visitors
Association salutes its 26 volunteers who
serve as front-line am bassadors for the city
of Portland and provide inform ation to
thousands o f regional, out-of-state and in
ternational visitors each year.
“V olunteer staff enhance the Portland
experience for all w ho w alk through our
doors by sharing their passion for Portland
and providing exam ples o f w hat to do and
sec in the area,” Said Visitor Services M an

Health Check-Ups For
Women Offered
A low -cost health check-up for women
will be given from 9 a.m . to 1 p.m. S atur
day, May 14, 1994, at W estern Slates
Chiropractic College Clinic.
The $20 exam ination fee will cover the
cost o f a pel vie exam wi th pap sm ear, breast
exam with instructions on self exam ination
and a spinal evaluation. The health screen
also includes a urinary lab test and a blood
pressure check. The check-ups arc adm in
istered by fourth-year interns under the
supervision o f chiropractic physicians.

To Benefit Youth Investment Fund
Valuable prizes, coupons and merchandise certificates will be sold in a single
packet fo r the April 28 "Night Out At Lloyd Center," event to benefit the Youth
Investment Fund.
For just $7.50, a packet o f tickets and coupons will allow the holders to enjoy
samplings at a number o f food court merchants, and ice skating pass, beverage ticket,
movie ticket, entry blank fo r door prizes and merchandise coupons. The packet is worth
many times its actual cost.
The Portland Mass Choir, a 95-voice auditioned choir with singers from 40
churches in the metro area, will give a free performance that night.

volunteer for the County or County-
funded programs.
Volunteer service varies from m em ber
ship on policy-m aking or advisory com m it
tees to assisting in the libraries, jails or health
clinics. Som e volunteers spend many hours
over a period o f years and others com plete a
short-term project. Some work directly with
the C ounty’s clientele and others do behind
the scenes supportive work.
A pproximately 65 persons will be hon
ored at the V olunteer A w ard Cerem ony on
April 21st at 10:30 a.m. at the County C ourt
house, Room 602. The certificates o f award
will be presented by Chair Beverly Stein and
C o m m issio n e rs S h arro n K elley , T anya
C ollier, D an Saltzm an and Gary Hansen.
The Annual Black A chievers Awards
drew more than 900 people to a gala ban
quet February 12 in Los A ngeles at the
Century Plaza Hotel.
T he banquet honored 26 A frican
Americans who have gained significant
success in their chosen fields. A w ard re
cipients were selected from categories such
as education, legend, lifetime achievement,
sports, film, television, m edia, publishing,
journalism and choreography.
Among the honorees were actors A n
gela Bassett, Brock Peters and W illiam
M arshall. Sports figures included M arcus
Allen and Jamal W ilkes. Dorian Harewood,
Chad Everett and Jeff G oldblum were
am ong the presenters.
Also honored was nine-year old Hydeia
Broadbent, who has A ID S. H ydeia w ap the
hearts o f the audience as she accepted the
Young Prodigy Award.

Skanncr new spapers, was the only person
form the N orthw est to be honored at the
banquet. Foster won the Frederick Douglass
“ N orthstar” Print M edia Award.
“I consider it a real honor to be chosen
for this aw ard,” Foster said. “Especially
when you consider the num ber o f fine
Black new spapers in C alifornia, to be
singled out is som ething special.”
