After a long day o f Easier festivi­ ties, the Scientology Ladies Society brought the Easter Bunny to visit with area children. The Drug Free M ar­ shals, teens and pre-teens who have taken a pledge to be drug-free, arrived shortly thereafter to sw ear in the big bunny and the kids and adults in the area. According to the National C lear­ inghouse on Drug and Alcohol Infor­ mation, every day in the United States 500 kids between the ages 10-14 be­ gin using illegal drugs, and 1000 kids betw een the ages o f 10-14 begin using alcohol. The D rug-Free M arshal cam ­ paign is a drug education and preven­ tion program initiated by the Church o f Scientology as part o f its Lead the W ay to a Drug-Free USA program. It recognizes the importance and value that youth have in creating a drug- free society. Crime Stoppers In 1993, calls to Crim e Stoppers, from people throughout the com m u­ nity, were responsible for the arrests o f 82 subjects on felony charges and the clearance o f 229 felony crimes. W hile a majority o f the people calling Crim e Stoppers in 1993 were not interested in a rew ard, to some m oney was motivation. Rew ards paid in 1993 totaled 4,900, which was an average o f $59.76 per felony arrest and an average o f $21.40 per felony crim e cleared. 1993 showed an increase over 1992, in the num ber o f subjects ar­ rested, crim es cleared, and rewards paid. In 1992, 61 subjects were ar­ rested, 137 felony crim escleared,and $3,600 paid in rew ards, for an aver­ age o f $59.02 per felony arrest and $26.28 per major felony crime cleared. Crim es solved through Crime Stoppers in 1993 included homicide, arson, com m ercial burglary, bank robbery, theft, armed robbery, forg­ ery, fraud, kidnap, rape, a missing person,and the arrestsof21 fugitives. In many o f those crim es, police had either exhausted all leads or had few leads to go on. Very few agencies, if any, can match the efficiency o f Crime Stop­ pers. Overhead costs are alm ost non­ existent. Board M embers volunteer their time and raise the m oney needed to pay rewards. No taxpayer dollars arc involved! The Crime Stoppers Coordinator, who is a Portland Police officer, is paid by the city.
