Andrew Young’s Book, “A Way Out
Of No Way”, A Spiritual Journey
W ith the release o f his book,
“ A Way Out o f No W ay” , former
Atlanta M ayor and U.N. A m
bassador has confirm ed his stat
ure as one o f the leading th in k
ers and c iv il libertarians o f our
time. But more im portantly, as
Young says in the introduction
to the book, “ A Way Out o f No
W ay” is the story o f how one
m an’s faith saw him through a
period o f incredible change here
and throughout the world. In
deed, it is a story about how
faith in God has changed the
world.
Now available in bookstores
across the country, “ A Way Out
o f No W ay” is a remarkable
chronicle o f the life and th in k
ing o f a man who fought side-
b y-sid e w ith M a rtin L u th e r
K ing, Jr. in the crucial c iv il
rights battles o f the '60s. Sub
titled, “ The S piritual M em oirs
o f Andrew Y oung” , “ A Way Out
o f No W ay” also provides here
to fo re u n k n o w n d e ta ils o f
Y o u n g ’s life . It is a life that has
been fille d w ith unprecedented
achievem ent fo r an A fric a n -
American: taking him from the
ram parts o f the c iv il rig h ts
movement, to a term as U.N.
Ambassador during the Carter
presidency, to tw o terms as
M ayor o f Atlanta, to co-chair
man o f the A tlanta Committee
fo rth e 1996O lym pic Games, to
vice chairman o f the Law Com
panies Group, one o f the largest
and most respected engineering
and environm ental consulting
companies in the world. Along
the way, Ambassador Young has
earned numerous honors, includ
ing the Presidential M edal o f
Freedom, the United States o f
A m e r ic a ’ s h ig h e s t c iv ilia n
award.
But as Ambassador Young
him self points out, none o f these
achievements w ould have been
possible w ith o u t his fa ith in
God. Speaking o f the changes
he’ s seen in the fo rty years since
he graduated from Howard U n i
v e rs ity , Am bassador Y oung
says, “ These changes all evolved
through the actions o f people —
people o f faith tw o courageously
responded to the co n flict, chaos,
violence and hatred around them
w ith a mysterious but m a g n ifi
cent faith. These people believed
that there is a purpose in human
existence and that the Creator
o f life and tim e, s p irit and mat
ter, somehow is present w ith his
creatures and continues to be
involved w ith ordinary men and
women.
“ These very people,” he con
tinues, “ in c ritic a l moments in
their lives and history, received
special insight and the courage
and the w ill to act. Because o f
them, the w orld has changed.
When seen in this context, life
suddenly makes sense; good
th in g s happen in the least
lik e ly situations, and a cer
tain divine destiny seems fu l
fille d .”
“ A Way Out o f No W ay” is
an inspirational and u p liftin g
book, the story o f a man and his
times that is as relevant and
tim e ly as to d a y ’ s news. As
Ambassador Young prepares for
the inevitable round o f national
and international ta lk shows and
bookstore signings, it is abun
dantly clear that his message is
timeless: faith and love really
can overcome the most harrow
ing and seemingly insurm ount
able obstacles.
“ A Way Out o f No Way:
The S piritual M em oirs o f A n
drew Y oung” is available in
bookstores across the country.

days of pregnancy. They are among
the most serious birth defects in the
United states. Research has shown
inadequacies in the diet to be the
cause of most cases of NTD.
Locally, the Lewis and Clark
Chapter of the March of Dimes, and
the Spina Bifida Clinic at the Child
Development and Rehabilitation
Center (CDRÇ) can provide you with
important information such as what
foods to eat that contain folic acid
and suggestions before you conceive
to help ensure a health pregnancy
and a healthy, happy baby.
“Half of all babies are conceived
without planning, so women need to
be on folic acid at all times,” says Dr.
Merkens, who likes to tell his pa
tients, “Mother was right...take your
vitamins. It’s that simple."
Dr. Merkens is a newly ap
pointed member of the local March
of Dimes” Health Professional Ad
visory Committee. He directs the
Spina Bifida program at the CDRC.
The March of Dimes is a na
tional voluntary health agency whose
mission is to improve the health of
babies by preventing birth defects
and infant mortality. Through its
Campaign for Healthier Babies, the
March of Dimes funds programs of
research, community services, edu
cation and advocacy.

March Of Dimes Birth Defects
Foundation Launches Public
Health Education Campaign
“Every sexually active woman
from puberty to menopause should
take vitamin supplements with folic
acid, daily. Taking increased folic
acid after discovering you are preg
nant is too late.” So states Dr. Mark
Merkens, recently appointed mem
ber of the Health Professional Advi
sory Comm ittee of the local March of
Dimes.
The Center of Disease Control
and Prevention recommends that all
women of childbearing age in the
United States who are capable of
becoming pregnant should consume
0.4 milligrams of folic acid per day.
The results could mean a 50 percent
reducuon in neural tube defects
(NTDs) in the United States, which
presents an important opportunity in
public health.
During Birth Defects Preven
tion Month in January, the March of
Dimes is focusing a health education
awareness campaign on the B-vita-
min, folic acid, as a preventative
measure to reduce the number of
babies bom with NTDs.Each year at
least 150,000 babies are bom with
birth defects in the United States,
About2,500 of those infants are bom
with NTDs involving the brain skull
and spinal cord. They are the result
of the failure o f the developing brain
and spine to close during the first 28

Pacific Power has proposed to
lower its overall prices in Oregon by
$7.2 million annually. This price de
crease is based on the amount the
company receives in property tax ben
efits resulting from the ballot measure
5 property tax initiative.
Pacific filed with the Oregon Pub
lic Utility Commission Feb. 15, for
perm ission to pass the decrease
through to customers beginning April

OlIR 2ND ANNIVERSARY MANAGER’S SPECIAL!
“Like many property owners in
Oregon, Pacific Power has seen a re
duction in the property taxes it pays to
support schools and government ser
vices,” said Pacific Power manager
Sheila Holden. “This decrease passes
through to our customers the savings
resulting from reduced property taxes.”
Pacific is proposing to include
property tax savings that have been
accumulating in a separate account
since the enactment of ballot measure
5, as well as projected property tax
savings through 1995. Pacific paid
approximately $17 million in Oregon
property taxes in 1993.
“This price decrease allows us to
remain a low-cost provider of electric
ity in the region,” said Holden. “In
fact, our overall prices today are lower
than they were in 1987 when we made
a promise to our customers to stabilize
prices.”
