In honor of Black History Month, independent video distributor Ivy C lassics, Inc., is featuring,Tam ango, an action adventure on the high seas starring Dorothy Dandridge and Curt Jurgens. Currently it is the only video available starring Ms. Dandridge, the “Black Marilyn Monroe.” Released in 1958, Tam ango is a landmark in the history of Black H ol lywood, credited as one o f the first films to explore the subject o f black roots and marking the beginning o f the industry’s examination of Afro- A merican heritage. The story begins when a group of soon -to-be slaves rebels against their c a p to rs on b o ard a ship. A iche (Dandridge) is tom between her lover, C aptain Reinker (Jurgens), and her people , who he exploits for his own profit. In the final confrontation, the slaves take Aiche hostage and Reinker is forced to choose between saving Aiche, or quashing the rebellion and possibly killing her. Critics claim ed the picture would never be released because of the interracial love scenes, but today they would hardly gam er a PG rating. Dandridge, the first black actress to be nominated for an Academy Award, gives a powerful performance and the role helped change society’s view of black/white relationships. It was during this era that black actors were given a more sensitive place in the story line. They became sym pa thetic characters with whom the audi ence could identify. The captive war rio rs w ho lead the reb ellio n on Tamango are depicted as especially strong and heroic. These and the other classic vid eocassettes from the Ivy Classics col lection are offered through regional d istrib u to rs and via d ire c t m ail. Tam ango has a suggested reliai price o f $29.95 and can be ordered directly from the company at 725 Providence Road, Charlotte N.C. 28207 (800) 669-4057 FAX (704) 335-0672.
