in praise and worship, giving testi
monies, sharing prayers and crying
tears o f joy.
We arrived at home all primed
and ready to eat.
Dinner time came and the table
groaned beneath the weight o f all the
delights which graced its surface.
How proudly every bearer en
tered with dish in hand. “ W ait until
you sink your teeth into this” , one o f
the guest exclaimed. “ And wait until
you taste my slamming dressing.”
The table was fu ll. O ur bellies were
more than fu ll. We were stuffed w ith
more stuff than the turkey had. The
table held the representations o f nine
different households. And - you know
that you had to at least taste some o f
what Everybody had prepared or they
would feel like they had been slighted
or that their dish did not measure-up
to what so-and-so brought.
“ Aren’t you going to have some
o f mine?”
“ W hy sure!” , was the overall re
sponse, “ Just w ait until I finish eating
this. I ’ ve got to make room for some
thing else. There is so much to choose
By M attie Ann Callier-Spears
This Thanksgiving D ay’s prepa
rations actually began the week be
fore the glorious day even came about.
The gathering o f food stuffs, prepar
ing the menu, assembling a list o f
prospective guests, calling each per
son on the list and confirm ing what
delicacy they w ould arrive w ith in
hand, in pot, in dish, in bag or w hat
ever. This took time.
The blessed day leaped in with
aromas and succulent odors a ll
through the house. Even w hile we
slept, we could smell in our subcon
scious state. Visions o f sweet potato
pies, tender and ju ic y turkey, mouth
watering roast beef, giblet gravy with
fresh mushrooms and that big pot o f
succotash w ith shrimp and sausage
and ham and okra and big lim a beans
and...and...and...and. it makes you
hungry a ll over again just thinking
about it..
A ll o f the food was finished. The
house was presentable. Everyone arose
and made haste fo r the church where
they would give thanks fo r all that
good food awaiting them at home?
No! N ot just fo r the food but for the
many, many blessings that God has
poured out upon us each and every
day o f the year. We had a joyous time
happy sounds. The children scamper
ing about. The games. The laughter
and squeals. The music. M y children
and their spouses and my offsprings.
[1 hope you have noticed the wording
o f this particular sentence,] The
prayers and blessings which passed
throughout the day and from person
to person and from heart to heart. It
was totally wonderful.
Yes! We were physically fu ll but
we were spiritually fu ll, too.
First o f all -- we don’ t need to
w a il until the last Thursday in the
month o f November to be thankful.
Give praise and thanksgiving, to the
Lord, at all time w ith a jo y fu l heart!
The Psalmist puts it so aptly for
us in the one hundredth chapter,
“ ...Worship the Lord w ith joy; come
before him w ith happy songs! Never
forget that the Lord is God. He made
us, and we belong to H im ; we are His
people, we are His flock.
The Lord is good; His love is
eternal and His faithfulness lasts for
us to be filled with His H oly Spirit.
That food we ate w ill only last for a
short time and then it w ill pass through
its proper channels and, then, it w ill
be released from the body.
As Christian Believers, we must
be fu ll o f the Holy Spirit at all times.
This is the only way that we can ward-
o ff the evil one. You see... When a
vessel is fu ll, you cannot put any thing
else into it. Nothing else can creep,
crawl or pour itself into it.
Have you ever fille d a container
and found that as you continued to
place more into it, the o ve rfillin g fell
o ff and onto the flo or or the table?
This is how it should be w ith us. Our
vessels are the temples o f the Holy
Ghost. Ifw eshouldchoosetoonly put
a little in, then you s till have loom for
something else to come in and f ill
your vessel.
“ Be careful!"
Satan is standing there w ith his
dump truck ready to unload.
Sure! You w ill be fu ll; but, with
ever.” [G N B]
Oh, Praise the Lord!
God is good! N otjust on Thanks
giving Day but all year long. Praise
His name!
No doubt, we were very fu ll from
what we had eaten. But...! God wants
what.
God gives, to us, over and over
again. Even when we don ’ t deserve it.
For He is a God o f mercy and grace.
God has pity for us. He loves us
greatly and He wants only what is
good an perfect for us.

was taking place in my home. The

you must be obedient.
I f we are fille d w ith righteous

w ill keep his covenant w ith you and
w ill show you His constant love; how

and let God handle it. [Read: Romans

So - why should we want to have
anything else occupy the vessel that
God has made?
“ The houses w ill be fu ll o f good
things which you did not put in them,
and there w ill be wells that you did not
dig, and vineyards and olive orchards
that you did not plant. When the Lord
brings you into this land and you have
all you want to eat, make certain that
you do not forget the Lord who res
cued you....” “ Have reverence fo r the
Lord your God, worship only him,
and make your promises in his name
alone. Do not worship other gods.any
o f the gods o f the peoples around you.
I f you do worship other gods, the
L o rd ’ s anger w ill come against you
like fir e and w ill destroy you com
pletely, because the Lord your God,
who is present w ith you, tolerates no
rivals.” [Deut. 6:11-15 G N B]
God has given us food to sustain
our physical bodies and He also gave
us the H oly Spirit to sustain our spiri
tual body which is our soul.
Ask yourself today, “ W hat m I
fu ll-of? Am I filled w ith the Holy
S pirit or am 1 fille d w ith the pleasures
o f the world?”
I f you should want to be fille d by
the H oly Spirit, you must first allow
yourself to be emptied.
