Somebody in one a d m in istra tio n
said, perhaps w ith some seriousness,
that he was try in g to b u ild a university
the football team could be proud of.
A n d that is to be adm ired, although
not necessarily by the alum ni
H arvard and Y ale, perhaps, are
exceptions, but the rest o f the in s titu ­
tions in the land seem in business
m erely to get a place in the w eekly
ratings.

The 17th ranked University of Portland Men's Soccer team opened
their 1993 season by winning the Umbro Invitational at Merlo Field
over the Labor Day weekend. Portland beat University of South
Alabama, 4-3 in overtime Saturday and Howard University Sunday
4-1. Jim Clarke, left, who scored 4 goals and two assists, was
named offensive player of the tournament.

on a problem facing m any school
