A few millennia ago people
believed that the color blue
helped defend babies
against evil spirits, since
blue was the color of the
havens. So, little girls were
dressed in other colors and
left to fight their own
battles, since ancient
people didn’t think baby
girls were as important as
baby boys.
Making Healthy Children
by L. Ron Hubbard
“ P o ssibly one o f the m ost
aberrative actions above the level o f
unconsciousness is striking a person
suddenly when he does not expect it
Slapping children particularly when
they are not alert to the fact that they
are about to slapped, tends to give an
individual a distrust o f all motion and
even when they become o f an age
when a slap would be the last thing
they would expect, they s till continue
to distrust motion "
“ The recognition o f one’ s size
in relationship to the scene in w hich
he finds h im s e lf and the objects and
organisms o f that scene is, in itself,
a sense message. It is p a rtic u la rly
try ing on children, and undoubt
edly was on you when y ou were a
child, to be surrounded w ith ob
jects w hich were so large W hen
one is recalling a childhood in c i-
dent, he is quite often startled to see
how b ig things appeared to h im and
how large those giants, the adults,
were around him . The feeling o f
being sm all in the v ic in ity o f large
objects sometimes produces the
feeling o f inadequacy.”
“ Slowness o r uncertainty o f
speech, stage frig h t in part, slow
ness o f com putation o r th inking ,
and hesitancy in taking directions
stem m ainly from being interrupted
in physical actions durin g early
y o u th .”
“ The child, because he may bring
danger upon himself, is continually
interrupted in his physical actions.
He reaches for somethingand is turned
away from it, not simply by words, but
by being removed from the object or
having the object removed from him.
He is kept out o f spaces he wishes to
enter by being pulled back He is
given one thing when he wants an
other. His desire to do for h im self and
efforts to control physical objects is
continually interrupted. From these
early interruptions, the ch ild builds
up a long chain o f experiences o f
interruption, not sim ply by speech,
but by barriers and obstacles in the
physical universe.
“ I f he has not been thoroughly
interrupted when a child, he can ana
lytically access later interruptions.
But i f he has been handled and denied
so as to interrupt him , when he was
young, his power o f decision is inh ib
ited, to say nothing o f his power o f
speech and thought.”
“ It is not possible to “ spoil’ a
child w ith love and affection. W ho
ever decided that was true, did so out
o f bad data and no observation. A
child needs all the love and affection
he or she can possibly get.”
