He was 47. A sign that Valvano had taken a turn for the worse came late last month when he re-entered the medi cal center for a 10-day stay that ended April 3rd. Weakened by the disease and chemotherapy treatment, he had been unable to attend a dinner in his honor during the weekend of the final four of the NCAA tourna ment, or tocarry through with his plan to throw out the first pitch for the New York Yankees home opener. Valvano had been diagnosed with cancer last June, but it had gone beyond the early stages, also affecting his back and lungs. It had been reported, but never confirmed, that Valvano had an or ganic type of cancer that spread through the bloodstream from an unknown origin to his spine, bones and other areas. Valvano went public with his fight against the disease, but knew from the start the outlook was bleak. saving last summer that he would v * t* * k /* la r A n c r v itn i i n / E r i need a n * miracle. Columbia Blvd., June 19, 1993 The Collins Center is a 45 year old dav-carc, and youth community center serving low-income, single parent families and providing youth with recreational facilities. The founder Evelyn Collinsalong with her late mother Grace started the center in response to appeals bv welfare recipient mothers for af fordable, safe, and quality daycare. They contended they could find work, if day care was provided Originally the daycare was housed in an apartment on Flint St. Shortly thereafter Miss Collins came into a modest inheritance of $300.00 from an aunt, and she also was able to secure a loan from her place of em ploym ent (M cir and F rank) for $300 (»0. She took the combined total o i $600.00 and bought a house on Rodney between Morris and Monroe streets. Within a y ear the demand for daycare was such that a non-profit board of directors was formed and a search was launched to find a larger building. A former legion hall was found at 128 N.E. Russell After renovating it became the present site for the Grace t M ' ’ Washington Lottery Results ♦,» Collins Memorial Center. Throughout the history of center, Miss Collins has had a profound effect on the youth she has worked with. Some hav e gone on to receive advance degrees, and become executives, po lice officers, and school principals. Miss Collins is now 79 years old, and continues to work at the center 8 to 10 hours a day. She docs so without pay. Last August, Chuck W ashington suggested to the board of directors of the Collins Center that Golf T ourna ment might se n e as a good way to heighten the awareness of business and professionals about the work of Collins Center in the inner-city.
