Elie, Cliff Robinson, Tracy Murray, Dave Johnson, Reggie Smith, and Rod Strickland signed autographs last Sunday at the Portland Saints auction which is a fund raising event for the Women's basketball team. 6 Years Old DaRay Keith Morrison BY JOHN PHILLIPS G iving something back was the theme o f the day on Sunday at the Midway Shopping center in southeast The 122nd Sports Card Trading Show was the site o f the 3rd annual Portland Saints Auction The Saints auctioned o ff shoes o f Portland T ra il Blazers players along with basketballs signed bv plavers and coaches and autograph pictures. The auction was held from one to six p m Fans paid five dollars each for autographs and all the proceeds went to the Portland Saints Women’ s A A U basketball team. The Portland Saints added seventy seven hundred dollars to their bank account thanks to Dave Johnson, Reggie Smith, Tracy Murray, C liff Robinson, Rod Strickland and “ Super” M ario Elie. I hope people understand that more than money was made at the auction. It was the fact that these men took their personal time to help someone that needed help Their time is always in demand, and they get paid big money for it, so that makes it even mean more. There are many people I would like to acknowledge for hclpi ng the Portland Saints achieve their goal. W ally Scales, Vice President, Special Events, John Lashway, Director, Sports Communications, and John Christensen, Assistant Director, Sports Communications. These three men really made the auction go over as well as it did, w ith all the help they provided me Then there is Greg Swain, Shauna Sullivan, Dale Dennis and Jeff Specht, w ith the 122nd Sports Card Trading Show staff. They made everything possible by having a special show just for the Portland Saints. T o u ris m In d u s t r y 6th Grade NE Portland Bastketball Team From Mom More than 250 Oregon tourism industry leaders gathered in Eastern Oregon A p ril 4-6, 1993 for the N inth Annual Governor’s Conference on Tourism. The conference was held in La Grande and Baker City, w ith the Oregon T ra il Sesquicentennial as a principal theme. The creative use o f existing resources and emerging trends to increase tourism was on the agenda. Trends included industry growth area such as eco-tourism, heritage tourism and cultural tourism, which are all part o f the reasons travelers w ill vis it Oregon in the future Other topics included the Americans w ith Disabilities Act (AD A). Packaging for the Group Tour market, a legislative breakfast featured lawmakers, such as Sen. B ill Kennemer, R-Milwaukie and Rep Ray Baum. R-La Grand, and a leadership panel discussed critical issues in the industry. The Tourism Conference was one o f the largest conferences ever held in eastern Oregon, and local host communities had been working for months to make certain local heritage is shared with the delegates. Ethnic meals and entertainment were showcased in Baker City, host site for the conference Nine eastern Oregon counties helped prepare menus and entertainment to display the diversity ol culture found in the region. Governor Barbara closed the conference on Tuesday in La Grande with an awards dinner at the Eastern Oregon State College campus Following the dinner, an adaptation o f the Oregon I rail musical “ Voices o f the T ra il” performed at the Performing Arts Center.
