Vance, right)- set out on the most extraordinary journey of their lives, rafting down the mighty Mississippi River toward freedom, in Walt Disney Pictures' sweeping live-action drama The Adventurers of Huck Finn. Tony Award-nominee Courtney B. Vance stars as Jim, a runaway slave who slowly teaches Huck Finn that regardless of popular belief, all people are fundamentally the same and deserve respect. A Walt Disney Pictures presentation, The Adventures of Huck Finn is directed by Stephen Sommers from a screenplay by Sommers, based on the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twin. The producer is Laurence Mark. The co­ producer is John Baldecchi and executive producers are Barry Bernardi and Steve White. The event will be held at The Paramount Theater in New York City. This year’s Award recipients are Carol Moseley-Braun, first African- American woman elected to the U S, Senate, Gail Devers, U S. Olympic gold Medalist; Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul and multiple Grammy Award- wining singer and songw riter. Sweet Alice” Harris, community activist and founder of Parents of Watts (POW); Lena Horne, legendary actress and singer, Rosa Parks, civil-rights activ­ ist; Tina Turner, multiple Grammy Aw ard-wining singer and actress; and Corla Wilson-Hawkins, educator and community activist . The 1993 Essence Aw ard s recipients will be profiled in the May issue of Essence. The Essence A w ards, first held in 1987, was created to focus national attention on distinguished African- American women whose exceptional achievements are often unpublicized. The Awards also provides an inspira­ tional voice to young African-Ameri­ cans, who can look to recipients of this prestigious Award as role models.
