Sometimes the team may be strug­ gling, you might have to work and miss a big game because of work or because of other obligations, but the Blazers do appreciate their fan support. Being the only Professional sports in town, brings a strong support throughout the com ­ munity and always gets people together watching games. "I think our fans have been our backbone fo ra longtime," said All-Star guard Clyde Drexler. "Being the back­ bone of this team and the way they support it is just phenomenal, they're our strength and inspiration." For some players such as Kevin Duckworth, a fan is only good when he is pulling for his team. According to Duckworth the only good fan is one who doesn’t give up on his or her respective In and around the Portland M etro­ politan area, people are finding them ­ selves having at least one thing in com ­ mon with total strangers-they’re fans of the Portland Trail Blazers. With the recent Blazer success, the team has acquired many new fans along the way. And being the only show in town, Blazer fans, new and old, ride the emotional roller coaster as the Blazers win or lose. Many Blazer fansdon’tg etto watch an actual game live at the Memorial Coliseum, but many listen to the radio or watch the game on television. Bring­ ing people together socially through a common bond such as the Trailblazers is a great social virtue of our diverse community. W hat do the Blazers mean to you? Entertainment, tall people making too much money, top notch basketball, or just something to read about in the morning paper. There are many levels o f Blazers fanatics throughout the city and there are many critics. Some say Blazer cable cost too much, there’s not enough games on television, or the ra­ The fans can be a valuable tool on your home court, from the yelling and screaming while the opponent is trying to set up a play, to giving the home team an emotional lift during a crucial point of the game. Although the Blazer fans are some of the best, fans all around the league keep the home court advantage team. "I prefer a fan that sticks with his team through thick and thin, you know the hard and good times," said the seri­ ous Duckworth . "None of these two faces who go back and fo rth .' alive. "Our fans mean a lot, it hypes you up,” saidSeattleSupersonicspointguard Gary Payton. "They get loud and might cause a turnovers or they might get nervous and miss a big shot." And what does Payton say about the little fans who look up to him? "I was growing up at one time and would have wanted a professional athlete to come up to me and give me advice and support," said Payton. I think they really get a lot out of us." It seems from talking with the play­ ers, that they don't just think o f Ians as someone who pays their check, but as someone who supports what they are doing. The Blazers are part o f our city and proud to represent it. The Blazers have fans too, they're fans o f their fans. The program provides a significant tool to help the City reclaim vacant and abandoned housing, while encouraging neighbor­ hood preservation, revitalization and stability. Through the Portland Homestead Program, PDC acquires vacant homes in need of repair and transfers them to qualified Homesteaders. In turn. The clinics will be held at the Ferfiwood Middle School Gymnasium at 1915 N. E. 33rd Avenue at 12:30 p.m ., and will run until 3:00 p.m. All goldenball teams and coaches are welcome. About the Saints The Portland Saints is a w om en’s AAU team that plays the top colleges in the West. The Sainis was created to provide opportunities for women to con­ tinue to play basketball at a higher level after college. Sporting a 75% winning percent­ age, the Saints want to promote w om en’s and girls’ basketball. Aims and Objectives The Saints want to provide positive role models for young girls. Their goal is to show young girls the importance of education and how athletics can pro­ vide avenues for them. Their desire is to be mentors for young girls, and hope­ fully, the clinics will provide them the opportunity. Hooks, executive director/CEO, NAACP, issued the fol­ lowing statement on the Tampa racial assault case: The heinous racial assault on Chris­ topher W ilson in the Tampa, Fla., area has shocked the nation’s conscience, reminding all of us of the basic vicious­ ness underlying racism. The arrest o f the three suspects helps ease the tensions produced by the horrible crime, and we would urge that if prosecution is deemed appropriate, it be pursued with the greatest speed and vigor. It seems clear that by any defini­ tion, this was a race hate crime and must be treated as such.
