Campaign For Human
Development
The Campaign for Human Devel­
opment is the US Catholic Bishops’
education-action program to combat
poverty in the United States. The pur­
pose o f C H D in Western Oregon is to
provide support and assistance to low -
income com m unity groups involved in
self-help and practical social change fo r
the common good.
Ten projects in Western Oregon
have very recently received grants from
the Campaign for Human Development.
These projects include: Rogue V alley
Fair Share, Southern Oregon ($20,000);
The C oalition o f Black Men, Portland

Mexicanas, Phoenix ($2.125); Sojourner
T ru th Theater C om pany, P ortland
($2,125); Rogue Valley Community De­
velopm ent C orp., Southern Oregon
($1,500); New Outlooks Regarding the
Homeless, M edford ($2,125); Oregon
R eforesta tio n C o o p e ra tive , Salem
($2,125); Portland Organizing Project
($2,125); Hotel W orkers Organizing
Committee, Portland ($2,125); Powers

Across the country, C H D funded
over 200 projects in 1992 in the amount
o f over 7 m illio n dollars. As the largest
funder o f its kind in the country, C H D
has key criteria fo r project e lig ib ility : 1.
The project must benefit a poverty
group.
2. Members o f the poverty group
must have the dominant voice in the
project.
3. Projects must w ork to bring about
institutional change by attacking the
basic social, economic and political
causes o f poverty.
The annual appeal to support C H D
takes place at a ll the Masses in the
Catholic parishes o f Western Oregon
on the weekend o f January 17, 1993.
Catholic parishioners in the A rchdio­
cese have shown strong support for
C H D , raising over $103,000 last year.
The Archdiocesan goal this year is
$110,000.
Possible new projects - In addition
to current C H D funded projects, the
o ffice is open to receiving requests for
C H D grant applications from potential
se lf-h elp co m m un ity im provem ent
projects in diverse local communities
and counties throughout Western O r­
