The events, organized at Oregon State University (OSU), will include films, speakers, musical performances, the dedication o f a meeting room and an art exhibit. There will be no classes held Jan. 18, but Phyllis Lee, director of Academic Affairs, said she hoped students and staff would remain on campus to take part in the president’s Tribute, at the LaSells Stewart Center, and other events. The M emorial Union concourse G allery is currently hosting an exhibit by 25 a r tis ts , “ A ffirm in g Traditions:Cultural Diversity in Con­ temporary A rt.” The invitational ex­ hibit is intended to give artists an oppor­ tunity to express political, social and cultural interpretations o f King’s be­ liefs and values. The exhibit was in­ stalled Dec. 29 on the Memorial Union Concourse and will be open through Feb. 12. O n W ednesday, Jan. 13, the dedi­ cation o f the Martin Luther King Con­ ference Room, a meeting room in the M emorial Union, will be held in con­ junction with a reception for the artists. The reception begins at 6:30 p.m. and will include music and other perfor­ mances. The dedication will take place at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m ., the M aranatha Church C hoir o f Port­ land will join with the choir o f the First Presbyterian Church, at 114 S.W. 8th S l The performance is free but dona­ tions may be requested. OSU will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18, to commemorate K ings’s birth and to allow students and staff to attend the 11th Annual President’s M artin L uther King Jr. Tribute at LaSells Stewart Center. A continental breakfast reception will begin at 8:30 a.m. Dr. Darryl Tukufu, president o f the Urban League in Portland, will address the theme o f “Living the Dream” during a 9:30 a.m. address. O ther events that morning will include perform ances by the Corvallis Peace Choir, the Children o f OSU C hoir and other groups that Lee hoped would create “a multicultural presentation of King’s * I Have a Dream ’ speech.” Monday afternoon, the College of Science students will sponsor a repeat performance by the group Bafafa in the MU Ballroom from 1 to 4 p.m. Keeping I k e D r e a m A liv e O ther activities are planned but not yet confirm ed. They include a candlelight vigil; the showing o f the films “The Long W alk Home,’’“Grand C anyon,” and “A Soldier’s Story;’’ a m edia panel on Thursday, Jan. 14,; a tribute during Culture Cafe, a weekly international culture exchange held on Fridays at W estminster House; and a speech by local minister Will Keim. The films are sponsored by the Associ­ ated Students o f OSU, the International Students o f OSU, the Resident Hall A ssociation and the Interfratem ity Council. The guest speaker sponsored by the city o f Corvallis, Mississippi legis­ lator and ’60s civil rights activist Aaron Henry, will be on campus Friday, Jan .22 to meet with various student groups and classes. Henry, 70, was aClarksdale, Miss., pharm acist whose 4th St. Drugstore becam e an unofficial headquarters for civil rights activities. He is a m ember of the board o f directors o f the national Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and has been president o f the Mississippi state conference of the NAACP since 1960.
