Community Awards To Be Given At
First Annual Gospel Concert
Featuring Heaven Bound
Untimely Death
Commissioner Kafoury today ex­
pressed her deep regret at the untimely
death of Bob Crooks, a Portland lawyer
whose practice focused on low-income
housing.
Along with representing numerous
non-profit housing developers. Crooks
devoted substantial volunteer time to
many community efforts - serving as
the Chair of Transition Projects, Chair
of the Union Gospel Ministries, and a
key member of the planning team that
produced the City’s Comprehensive
Housing Affordability Strategy. It was
Crooks’ devoted legal work that paved
the way for the City’s successful effort
to assist a community non-profit ac­
quire the Dominion Capital inventory.
“This is a terrible loss to all of us,”
Kafoury said. “I don’t know of one
other person who has worked as hard or
accomplished as much for low-income
housing in such a short period of time.”
Crooks died of an unexpected heart
attack while running Saturday evening.
Dr. Charlotte Bibb Harrison, 63,
retired education administrator and
former Portland resident, died Sunday,
Nov. 22, in Oklahoma City of compli­
cations following a heart attack.
Dr. Harrison, who began her edu­
cation career in Portland w ith the Na­
tional Teacher Corps, taught in the Port­
land Public Schools and w as the associ­
ate director of the Portland Urban
Teacher Education Program and an
Oregon State University instructor in
1973-74. As a curriculum specialist,
she trained other educators in Oregon,
Virginia and Oklahoma, and published
teachers’ manuals for developing tests
and course work.
She retired in Oklahoma City,
where she was a teacher, coordinator
for comprehensive arts education and
later director of staff development lor
Oklahoma City Public Schools. She
was listed in the 1982-83 Who s Who in
the South and Southwest.
Dr. Harrison wasamember of Delta
Sigma Theta sorority, Phi Delta Kappa,
Links Inc., Tes Trams and the Set Club.
She attended Church of the Redeemer
in Oklahoma City, where she belonged
to the Episcopal Church Women.
She is survived by her husband,
Alvin Edward Harrison Jr.; four chil­
dren, including former Portlanders John
King Bibb and Sharon Ellen Bibb; and
three grandchildren.
A service was held Saturday, Nov.
28, in Oklahoma City.

ganizations have been identified to re­
ceive community support awards on
December 12,1992. The awards will be
given out during a gospel concert fea­
turing music from Heaven Bound and
several other local groups. The event
entitled “God Is Real, He Works
Through Others” will be held at Fel­
lowship Missionary Baptist Church,
4009 N. Missouri, at 5 pm . The commu­
nity is invited to join in this celebration.
Admission is free.
Award recipients include, Joyce
Harris, Self Enhancement Inc, MYCAP,
Rev. Johnny Pi ck, Sisters of the Road
Cafe, Kathy Roberson, Freedom in the
Son, Renee Timms, the House of Umoja,
Georgina Jones, and the late Steve Scott.
The awards arc in recognition of their
contribution to die fight against drugs
and alcohol abuse, the reduction of
gang involvement and breaking the
cycle of dysfunction in our community.
The project is sponsored by the
Blackeyed Peas, a gathering of women
dedicated to personal growth and posi­
tive change through sharing of sister­
hood and friendship. We have come
togehter to promote healthy changes
for women and people in recovery in
hopes that our message of healing and
well-being will be extended throughout
our families and community.

Offered
The hospitals and health care orga­
nizations of Legacy Health System in­
vite area seniors (age 55+) to attend a
Free Health Screening. The screening
provides numerous important health
tests and services, including: blood test
(cholesterol, blood sugar, and others),
general physical assessment by nurses,
blood pressure, dental and oral cancer
cheek, vision and glaucoma check, hear­
ing test, lung health cheek, nutrition
counselling, breast cancer self-exami­
nation instructions, and others.
For those desiring the full blood
test, it is suggested you arrive in a
fasting state - no food or drink (except
water and medications) for the previous
12 hours. Known diabetics should fol­
low their regular eating schedule.
Screenings are conducted weekly
at different locations throughout the
Portland Metropolitan area. Please call
