Sounds Of Thanksgiving BY MATTIE ANN CALLIER-SPEARS The Harold Jeffries Youth Center of Portland Foursquare Church was the scene Saturday evening, November 7, of the annual banquet recognizing ten years’ service o f North Portland Bible College to the north and northeast Port­ land Christian community. More that one hundred friends and supporters of the school gathered to observe the occa­ sion. Academic Dean Michael Lindsey presented Student of the Year awards recognizing outstanding service to Larry Davis of Bcrean Baptist Church and Julia Black of Fellowship Church of God. Rev. Jam es Coleman, pastor of Fellowship Church o f God, chaplain at Emanuel Hospital, and faculty member of the Bible College, received the C hris­ tian Leadership Award. Music was provided by Mrs. Jean Hansen, the Lifters o f His Name vocal ensemble, and Rev. and Mrs. Dorsey McCullough. Dr. Bill Ritchie, pastor of Crossroads Church in Vancouver, and radio minister on station K.PDQ, was the speaker for the evening. The college received a memorial gift in tribute toC lotine “T ina” Wilson, late wife of college board member Rev. Fred Wilson of Bethel AME Church. Thisgifl will be dedicated toward erect­ ing a permanent building on the prop­ erty w hich the college has purchased at Vancouver and Alberta. A highlight of the evening was the surprise presentation o f a plaque o f appreciation to Mrs. Beth N ance,oneol the founders o f the college and school librarian and teacher, for her ten years o f dedication to the vision of the col­ lege. North Portland Bible College is committed to strengthening the local churches by providing affordable, ac­ cessible Bible education. Fremont St., offi­ cially kicked off the holiday toy and food drives at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday (Nov. 24) for Portland Fire Bureau’s Toy and Joy Makers and the Sunshine Division of Portland Police Bureau. This is the 14th year that Alameda students will donate toys and food in an effort to make the holiday season brighter for less fortunate children, ac­ cording to parent coordinator Karen Masterson. Despite his many transitions, he has remained a youngster with a refreshing outlook on life. The challenges he has encountered have only made him more determined to achieve. He has his sights set on college and, with his outstanding academic record, is destined to attain Nearly 100,000 children in this country wait to be adopted. More than 50 percent of them are African-Ameri­ can. They range from toddlers to teen­ agers. Some are healthy; others have physical, em otional or menial disabili­ ties. Still others are siblings who want homes together. During November, National Adop­ tion M onth, the National Adoption Center is focusing attention on the wait­ ing children and encouraging people to enrich their families by adopting them. Sometimes myths about adoption keep people from adopting. T oday, you don’t have to be married, own your own home, or have a lot of money. All states provide subsidies so that those inter­ ested in waiting children can afford to adopt them. Through the adoption process, in­ dividuals or couples are helped to de­ cide what type of child would best fit into their home.
